SUMMARY
Responsible for reviewing the upcoming OR schedule, ensuring all necessary equipment is available and functional, setting up instrumentation for surgical procedures, performing surgical counts according to facility policy, and preparing case carts; collaborates with the OR circulator and staff to maintain a sterile and efficiently operating environment. Includes inventory, disassembly, decontamination, high‑level disinfection, and turnover of operating room instrumentation and endoscopy equipment.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Review the OR schedule to anticipate instrument and equipment needs.
- Ensure all equipment is available and in proper working order.
- Set up instrumentation and equipment for surgical procedures.
- Perform surgical counts and pass supplies, equipment, and instruments.
- Prepare and cut suture material; assist in specimen handling.
- Assist in counting sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments with the circulating nurse.
- Assist in room turnover and other duties as assigned.
- Maintain the surgeon’s preference cards and coordinate with the circulator.
- Demonstrate respect and regard for patients, families, visitors, and employees.
- Remain culturally aware and communicate effectively with diverse patients and staff.
- Use interpreters when necessary to communicate with patients who have limited English proficiency.
- Adhere to infection control principles, aseptic technique, and sterilization processes.
- 1–5 years of prior experience preferred.
- Knowledge of aseptic technique, infection control principles, and sterilization techniques.
- Knowledge of Spaulding Classification, Universal Protocol, and AORN Standard and Recommended Practices.
- Ability to prioritize equipment needs of the operating room.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
- Certification/Licensure: CST and BLS required.
- High School Diploma or GED required; graduation from an accredited surgical technology program required.
- One or more of the following: completed a U.S. military surgical technology training program; holds a certified surgical technician credential from a nationally recognized certifying body; employed as a surgical technologist on or before July 1, 2013; completed an accredited program but has not yet obtained certification (must obtain within 12 months of graduation).
