Translator/Interpreter (Fee for Service) — $ /hour
People, Incorporated is a human service agency serving the Southcoast community, including the Greater Fall River, New Bedford, and Taunton areas. As a partnership of specialized, integrated programs, we provide opportunities to people with life challenges. The Early Intervention (EI) program is looking for a caring Translator/Interpreter who provides language interpretation services to support communication between EI providers, children, and families with limited English proficiency or those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
The EI Translator ensures accurate and culturally sensitive interpretation during assessments, meetings, and service delivery, enabling effective communication for all parties involved.
- Provide real-time interpretation during early intervention sessions, intakes, assessments, home visits, IFSP meetings, and other interactions as requested by EI Developmental Specialists, Therapists, and Supervisors.
- Accurately convey spoken or signed language between English and the target language, preserving meaning, tone, and intent.
- Act as a cultural liaison to help EI team members understand cultural nuances affecting communication and service delivery.
- Assist families in understanding the cultural context of EI services, policies, and procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of interpretation sessions, including time spent, services provided, and significant observations.
- Translate written documents such as consent forms, informational brochures, and service plans as requested.
- Participate in team meetings to discuss service delivery and contribute to effective communication strategies.
- Adhere to confidentiality requirements and professional ethics related to interpreting in EI settings.
- Maintain neutrality and impartiality during interpreting assignments; avoid personal opinions influencing communication.
- Participate in ongoing training to stay updated on best practices in interpretation, EI services, and cultural competency.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or division management team.
- Attend all staff meetings and required training sessions, including in-service training, as scheduled.
- Maintain all program and agency required trainings.
- Written and verbal fluency in English and the target language(s) (spoken or sign language).
- Strong understanding of medical and educational terminology relevant to early intervention.
- Maintain current copies of required professional licenses, CPR, first aid, and health records.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to build rapport with children, families, and professionals from diverse backgrounds.
- A qualifying criminal background check, driving record, and a valid driver’s license required.
- Ability to provide current copies of all required health records.
