Job Description

The Director of Advancement Communications and Marketing oversees the strategic direction and operations of the Advancement Communications and Marketing (ACM) team and provides leadership for all of University Advancement’s (UA) marketing and communications efforts. The Director ensures a cohesive, audience‑centered approach that strengthens the University’s relationships with alumni, donors, and other key constituents that support the division’s fundraising and engagement goals.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Advancement Operations & Planning, the Director is responsible for supervision and direction of five senior associate directors who collectively supervise 22 professionals. The Director leads the vision, strategy, and performance of communications and marketing across development and alumni audiences, aligning storytelling, design and branding, channel strategy, and marketing/audience data in a unified, high‑impact operation.

Primary

Duties
  • Defines and leads the long‑term vision for ACM, aligned to UA priorities.
  • Oversees the integration of communications, creative, marketing strategy, marketing technology, and digital insights into a single, cohesive function.
  • Collaborates with the AVP, Office of University Communications on a regular basis.
Team Leadership and Culture
  • Builds and leads a high‑performing ACM leadership team aligned around shared goals, clear expectations, and collective accountability.
Overall Communication and Marketing Strategy
  • Works collaboratively across the division to define fundraising and engagement objectives for the year ahead.
  • Responsible for the quality and effectiveness of all alumni and donor communications across UA‑owned channels and touchpoints.
  • Ensures a cohesive narrative ecosystem— from campaign storytelling to annual giving to alumni engagement—that reflects BC’s priorities and resonates with each audience.
  • Directly oversees how major institutional moments (campaign milestones, principal gifts, presidential transition, key initiatives) are communicated to alumni and donors.
Salary

Full‑Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $152,100 to $190,150; salary commensurate with relevant experience.

Requirements

This position requires seven to ten years of progressively responsible experience in communications, marketing, or a related function, preferably in a development‑related environment, and with significant leadership experience overseeing integrated teams. The ideal candidate has integrity, strong management experience, a proven ability to prioritize under pressure, and the ability to seamlessly adapt to changes in direction.

  • Demonstrated success leading enterprise‑level communications and marketing strategy, ideally within higher education, advancement, or a similarly complex, mission‑driven organization.
  • Experience overseeing integrated functions such as communications, creative, digital marketing, and analytics, with the ability to align teams around shared goals and outcomes.
  • Experience managing budgets, allocating resources strategically, and prioritizing work to maximize impact.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to shape messaging at both strategic and executional levels.
  • Deep understanding of brand stewardship and the ability to ensure consistency, quality, and audience relevance across all communications.

A Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in marketing, journalism, communications, or other related fields; a Master’s degree is preferred.

Must be a leader who is highly motivated and able to motivate others, dedicated to the goals of advancing higher education, and have an appreciation for Jesuit Catholic education and the goals and values of Boston College.
