Medical Intermediate Care Unit (MICU) Nurse - RN III (260003YC)
The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, is seeking compassionate and skilled Registered Nurses (RNs) to join our Medical Intermediate Care Unit (MICU) at our Jamaica Plain campus. This unit provides high-acuity care to critically ill patients, including perioperative and post‑anesthesia care. The RN will deliver comprehensive nursing care, engage in clinical decision‑making, delegate responsibilities, and coordinate care to meet hospital standards and regulatory requirements.
ShiftSchedule
Day Shift – 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Evening Shift – 3:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.
Night Shift – 11:15 p.m. – 7:15 a.m.
Duties and Responsibilities- Serves as team leader in the absence of the Nurse Manager, assigning, supervising, and evaluating perioperative nursing care.
- Ensures nursing care follows established standards and documents care for patients from community and referral agencies.
- Initiates physical, psychosocial, and spiritual assessments following admission procedures and unit policy.
- Develops a Plan of Care collaboratively with the patient, significant others, multidisciplinary team, and resources.
- Implements and documents nursing interventions aligned with the Plan of Care and regulatory requirements.
- Accurately transcribes physician orders, administers medications, and monitors responses, including adverse or toxic effects.
- Continuously assesses patient status to determine intervention effectiveness and responds to significant changes.
- Documents the nursing care process, outcomes, and situational occurrences per hospital and unit policies.
- Provides education and training to patients and significant others to support improved outcomes and ongoing care needs.
- Performs charge nurse duties as delegated, ensuring organized and consistent care delivery.
- Participates in performance improvement and risk management activities, including data collection, analysis, and implementation of strategies.
- Demonstrates competence in age‑appropriate care and sensitivity to cultural and spiritual needs.
- Knowledge of nursing theories and principles in medical/surgical and critical care settings.
- Ability to identify symptoms of mental illness and emotional disorders.
- Strong oral and written communication skills for effective collaboration with providers and teams.
- Ability to remain composed, make sound decisions, and respond swiftly in high‑pressure or emergency situations.
- Demonstrated ability to build rapport and interact respectfully with diverse populations.
- Capacity to coordinate team efforts and achieve shared objectives.
- Familiarity with supervisory principles and practices.
- Demonstrated knowledge of nursing practices in critical care settings.
- Experience using the Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment (CIWA) scale to assess patients and administer appropriate medication.
- Ability to prioritize and adapt quickly in emergency and high‑acuity situations.

Located in Jamaica Plain, Boston, the hospital serves patients from public agencies and private providers, with a focus on economically and socially disadvantaged populations.
Compensation and BenefitsSalary: $90,304.24 – $ yearly. Benefits include a comprehensive package supported by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
