Job Description – Intravenous Nurse (I.V.) – RN III (260003Y3)
The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking an experienced Intravenous Nurse to join our dedicated team as an Evening shift I.V. Team Registered Nurse (RN III). In this role you will work closely with health‑care professionals to deliver expert intravenous therapy to a diverse community that includes DPH, DMH, DOC, DDS, and Shelter clients.
Under the guidance of the Nurse Manager you will advocate for patients, coordinate intravenous therapy, and adhere strictly to infection control guidelines.
Hours: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM. Working every other weekend day. Days off are assigned.
Responsibilities- Implement the nursing process in partnership with the healthcare team to deliver skilled IV therapy to a diverse clientele.
- Initiate and oversee IV therapy, ensuring adherence to infusion therapy standards and integration into Individual Care Plans.
- Conduct daily assessments of IV sites for infiltration and phlebitis.
- Assess and maintain central line sites, changing dressings per policies and standards.
- Address IV line issues and respond to emergency codes, performing necessary IV access and related duties.
- Perform STAT blood draws as needed.
- Rigorously adhere to infection control guidelines and aseptic techniques.
- Document interventions, procedures, and events in line with established standards and regulations.
- Engage in research activities and contribute to performance‑improvement initiatives.
- Commit to continuous professional growth through mandatory reviews, skill updates, performance appraisals, and participation in educational programs and professional organizations.
- Serve as an advocate and resource for staff, patients, families, visitors, other departments, and outside agencies, addressing complaints, clarifying policies, and maintaining privacy and confidentiality.
- Enhance safety, risk management, infection control, productivity, and cost effectiveness by managing the environment, supplies, pharmaceuticals, and equipment.
- Perform ICU‑specific competencies and support Intermediate Care Unit staff as needed.
- Provide age‑appropriate care and address patients’ cultural and spiritual needs.
- Respond to all code emergencies and insert intraosseous needles when IV access is unobtainable.
- Maintain CPR and ACLS certification.
- Function on nursing units as a staff RN when required.
- Insert PICC lines using a venous ultrasound machine and troubleshoot occlusion of long lines.
- Ensure proper placement of long lines via X‑ray and perform mid‑line catheter insertion for IV antibiotic therapy.
- Apply knowledge of scientific theories and principles of nursing related to IV therapy and chemotherapy.
- Communicate effectively with staff and doctors.
- Work collaboratively with nursing unit staff.
- Utilize knowledge of drugs used in emergency situations.
- Apply emergency procedures, including CPR.
- Establish rapport and interact tactfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Maintain a calm demeanor in stressful or emergency situations.
- Accurately document and maintain records.
- Communicate and document according to hospital policy, assess veins for IV therapy and blood drawing, and evaluate existing lines for changes.
- Adhere to infection control protocols and make quick decisions in emergencies.
- Possess extensive knowledge of IV medications, admixtures, chemotherapeutic agents, and blood products, ensuring safe administration.
- Recognize symptoms of mental and emotional disorders, follow lab protocols, and interact positively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Efficiently multitask and maintain a calm demeanor in stressful situations.
