Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • A. Deliver expert, evidence‑based nursing care to patients and families.
  • Implement nursing process: assess veins and access needs, assess patient and family needs, evaluate home line care routine, analyze assessment data, plan care with measurable outcomes, implement plan, evaluate response to interventions.
  • Document care according to Institute and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Administer medications relevant to venous access and imaging protocols; perform procedures safely and efficiently per Institute policy.
  • Evaluate educational and psychological needs of patient and family; incorporate identified needs into plan of care.
  • Educate patient and family about disease, vein choice, preservation techniques, and line care.
  • Recognize and respond to emergency situations appropriately; maintain BLS and/or ACLS certification.
  • Identify community resources to promote continuity of care and make appropriate referrals.
  • Comply with accepted standards of professional nursing practice, licensure and registration requirements.
  • B. Establish rapport with patients and families from diverse cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds.
    • Interact in a caring and compassionate manner respecting privacy and confidentiality.
    • Develop problem‑solving approaches meeting individual needs.
    • Demonstrate knowledge and skills for age‑specific care and support.
    • Foster an environment sensitive to diverse populations, including culture, ethnicity, gender and age.
  • C. Manage the environment of patient care.
    • Monitor environment with attention to patient safety; assure compliance with regulatory standards.
    • Comply with Institute, Nursing and Patient Care Services policies, procedures and work rules.
    • Adhere to the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (ANA, 2001) in all professional practice.
  • D. Contribute to the formulation and achievement of goals on the unit, Division of Nursing and Institute.
    • Assist in defining goals and developing systems and work processes for unit, Division and Institute.
    • Participate in unit, program‑based and divisional committees, councils and initiatives.
    • Demonstrate flexibility in setting and changing priorities; accept additional responsibilities as needed.
    • Participate in QA/QI projects for unit and Division of Nursing and Patient Care Services.
    • Support research activities within unit, Division and Institute.
  • E. Work collaboratively and function as an effective member of the health care team.
    • Demonstrate ability to collaborate with peers and co‑workers; address and manage conflicts effectively.
    • Be a contributing member of the multidisciplinary health care team.
    • Delegate appropriately and supervise assistive personnel in patient care provision.
    • Assume charge nurse role when necessary; coordinate patient flow into infusion areas.
  • F. Seek opportunities to foster professional growth.
    • Identify areas for professional growth, formulate goals, objectives and methods of accomplishment.
    • Attend in‑services, workshops and seminars; share information gained with colleagues.
    • Facilitate professional growth of self and others as preceptor and mentor for new staff.
    • Collaborate in preparing professional reports, articles and presentations for colleagues and the public.

Minimum Job Qualifications
  • Education
    :
    Associate degree in Nursing;
    Bachelor of Science in Nursing strongly preferred. Associate must complete BSN within 4 years.
  • Experience
    : 1 year (or equivalent) of nursing experience where venous access is a primary responsibility.
License/Certification/Registration Required
  • Registered Nurse licensed in Massachusetts.
  • Certification in Venous Access Nursing preferred – VA‑BC or CRNI.
Patient Contact
  • Yes. Understands special needs and behaviors of age groups served (young adults to geriatrics).
