SUMMARY:
The Nursing Assistant is responsible for providing direct patient care under the direction of an RN or Clinical Leader. Duties include vital signs, patient transfers, making and changing beds, measuring intake and output, and other related duties as assigned. The assistant works in a complementary or assistive role to a qualified licensed nurse, performing common nursing assistant functions for which they have documented competencies.
The role assists with basic human needs such as nutrition, hydration, mobility, comfort, elimination, socialization, rest, and hygiene, and collects, reports and documents simple data.
- Assist patients in and out of chairs, beds, wheelchairs, stretchers, etc.
- Make beds, both occupied and unoccupied; change linen as necessary.
- Assist with treatments within scope of responsibility.
- Assist with meals and nourishment, including water and fluids; feed patients as necessary.
- Initiate or perform CPR in an emergency situation.
- Perform indwelling catheter care and apply Texas catheters.
- Observe, report, measure and record urinary output, feces and emesis.
- Apply ice bags, collars, warm or cold unsterile compresses.
- Take and record weights, temperatures, pulse, respirations and blood pressure.
- Give appropriate enemas.
- Collect specimens and record information.
- Assist with admission, discharge and transfer of patients.
- Perform skin care including incontinence and decubitus care as directed by RN.
- Observe patients on 1:1 or close observation status.
- Apply protective and therapeutic devices.
- Assist with placement of Blanketrol.
- Assist with post‑mortem care.
- Report any untoward or unusual occurrences to nurse.
- After completion of restraint education and under the direction of RN, may apply and/or assist in restraining patients.
- Consider patient's safety at all times.
- Report faulty equipment immediately and in accordance with hospital policy.
- Report unsafe conditions and/or incidents as they occur.
- Maintain patient's rooms in a neat and orderly manner with a clear walk‑in area.
- Safely transport patients via wheelchair or stretcher.
- Attach patients to cardiac monitors (in telemetry, ICU or ED only).
- Carry out body substance isolation in all patient care to protect self and others.
- Give complete bath/partial bed baths, assist the patient to bath or shower, give tepid sponge baths, and assist the patient with Sitz bath.
- Takes care of patient's teeth, dentures, nails, feet and shave patient.
- Store hearing aids, dentures, eyeglasses and other valuables safely in accordance with hospital valuables policy.
- 6 months of experience in a hospital, long‑term care, or rehabilitation setting preferred.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Current MA CNA certification and BLS required.
Pay Range: $18.96 - $27.69
