Assistant Clinical Professor, Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery
The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University invites applications for an assistant clinical professor of small animal soft tissue surgery. The successful candidate will participate in pre‑clinical didactic teaching and hands‑on instruction in clinical and surgical skills across the DVM curriculum, contribute to resident education, and supervise resident research projects. This position is on a continuous term (tenure equivalent) track.
The Foster Hospital for Small Animals receives approximately 35,000 cases per year, providing a robust and varied surgical caseload. The emergency and critical service is a 24‑hour Level 1 Trauma Center and includes intraoperative ultrasound, fluoroscopy, CT, MRI, and arthroscopic, laparoscopic, and thoracoscopic surgery. The candidate will be part of a faculty team that includes surgeons, neurologists, and ophthalmologists who provide surgical services across a full range of specialties.
There are many opportunities to develop independent or collaborative research projects with faculty across Tufts campuses and the New England medical community. The school’s research strengths are in musculoskeletal disease, cardiovascular disease, comparative oncology, and urology, among others. All scholarly activity is valued in the promotion process, and faculty are expected to remain current in their discipline.
Success requires collaboration in a team environment. Senior faculty members are available for mentorship. Between 26–32 weeks will be assigned to clinical activity, with the remaining time distributed to teaching (approximately 4–8 weeks), research and scholarly activity (4–8 weeks), and administrative service (2–5 weeks) in accordance with university guidelines and the appointment track.
Qualifications- Demonstrated interest and expertise in soft tissue surgery in small animals.
- DVM degree or equivalent and completion of an American College of Veterinary Surgery and/or European College of Veterinary Surgery approved residency.
- Board certification required within two years of hire.
- Eligibility for licensure in Massachusetts.
- Strong teaching enthusiasm and demonstrated ability to engage students.
- Clinical excellence and ability to manage a robust caseload.
- Ability to engage in scholarly activity and research.
- Effective communication skills and teamwork.
The salary range for assistant clinical professors is $124,000 to $186,000, determined based on education, experience, discipline, rank, internal equity, and budgetary considerations.
