Dakin Humane Society is a community-supported animal welfare organization that provides shelter, medical care, spay/neuter services, and behavioral rehabilitation for more than 20,000 animals and people each year. Since its inception in 1969, Dakin has become one of the most recognized nonprofit organizations in the Pioneer Valley and a national leader in animal welfare.

Now Hiring:
Pet Health Center Veterinarian

Founded in 2022, The Pet Health Center (PHC) at Dakin Humane Society is a community-focused, accessible veterinary clinic that provides services including sick and wellness exams, vaccinations, diagnostics, routine surgeries, and dentals for cats and dogs. One of the PHC’s primary goals is to lessen the number of barriers to veterinary medical care. Our team assists clients through a contextualized incremental care model - a patient-centered and experience-based model that focuses on problem‑solving to achieve the best veterinary outcomes in the context of limited financial resources.

As more pets and families turn to Dakin for affordable care (averaging 6,000+ appointments annually with opportunities for future growth), we’re excited to bring on a new veterinarian who shares our commitment to exceptional medicine and serving our local community. Together, we help clients whose pets might not otherwise be able to access veterinary care. The PHC team provides an environment where all clients feel welcome and heard.

We work with each client to help them overcome barriers, understand their options for short- and long‑term care, and be active, informed decision‑makers for their pets.

We keep our services accessible, but we do not compromise on medicine. Our clinic is designed and equipped to deliver high‑quality diagnostics and treatment at an affordable price with the support of local and national donors who supplement our operating costs.

This position will be responsible for all aspects of wellness care and treatment of sick and injured pets. Although it is not a requirement, preference will be given to candidates with interest in and experience with minor surgical procedures, sterilization, and dentals.

You’ll work with an outstanding leadership team and support staff and help make veterinary care more accessible to the families who need it most. Dakin’s PHC shares a facility with our shelter and community spay‑neuter department, which facilitates organization‑wide teamwork, problem‑solving, and efficient use of resources.

We're hoping to hire a full‑time, 40‑hour‑per‑week veterinarian. At present, the Pet Health Center team sees patients Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. We know great people don't always fit into a traditional schedule.

What You'll Bring:
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent) from an AVMA‑accredited veterinary school.
  • Current Massachusetts veterinary license (or the ability to obtain one within three months), including Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration.
  • A commitment to providing exceptional veterinary care while treating every client with compassion and respect.
  • Strong communication skills, a collaborative spirit, and a passion for advancing animal welfare through accessible veterinary care.
  • Dakin is committed to supporting recent graduates and candidates with limited experience by providing training and mentorship to those who demonstrate genuine interest in community‑focused veterinary medicine.
Benefits include:
  • Ample amounts of PTO (like 30 days in your second year of full‑time employment, and 35 days in your third year, in addition to 5 paid holidays)!
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Flexible Spending Account
  • 100% employer‑paid Life Insurance Policy
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • 401k with employer‑paid advisors
  • Discounted pet care for your pets
  • Generous continuing education allotment with paid days off, in addition to regular PTO
  • Annual reimbursements for license fees, liability insurance, and professional membership dues
  • Eligibility for the Non‑Profit Student Loan Forgiveness Program

Salary: $115,000 to $125,000
-Additional compensation consideration may be given to candidates with significant experience.
