Operations Manager

The Operations Manager plays a critical role in overseeing daily transit operations and ensuring high-quality service delivery. The position is based in the greater Boston, MA area and supports Boston Public Schools. Responsibilities include frontline operational performance, on‑time service delivery, employee supervision, compliance with safety and service standards, technology implementation, monitoring of service metrics, and working closely with leadership to drive operational excellence.

  • Competitive compensation package: $68,000‑$85,000
  • Vacation: minimum of two (2) weeks

Key Responsibilities
  • Key member of the extended local leadership team with 24/7 management presence to frontline operations staff.
  • Monitors and evaluates daily operations activities and employee performance, including missed runs, on‑time statistics, work and pay hours, customer complaint data, attendance, accident data, and other related functions.
  • Ensures performance indicators meet or exceed client and corporate expectations, minimizing liquidated damages and correcting failures.
  • Responsible for implementation and support of business‑critical operations technologies (VDS, Zonar, AVL, etc.), serving as a subject matter expert and making recommendations for tool application.
  • Manages the location’s performance, recommends best practices, trains on technology solutions, and facilitates implementation to improve service quality and financial performance.
  • Coordinates dispatching, in‑service monitoring, and turn‑in activities for daily transit operations.
  • Develops manpower requirements for window and yard supervisors and evaluates patterns for revisions.
  • Creates procedure manuals for windows, yard supervisors, and drivers.
  • Holds routine meetings with window and yard supervisors to address service issues and keep staff informed of changes and requirements.
  • Completes necessary daily and/or weekly reports for the company and client to ensure service quality.
  • Tracks and maintains employee attendance, Zonar and VDS systems.
  • Recommends and disciplines operations personnel and informs the branch manager of potential operational risks.
  • Ensures staff are well trained, promote the company vision, values and culture throughout operations.
  • Maintains positive employee and labor relations, engaging frontline staff, acknowledging performance, providing coaching and promotion opportunities, and ensuring overall job satisfaction.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned and may assist in other areas based on location needs.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Skilled in customer service delivery, problem‑solving, and decision making.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills; ability to influence without authority.
  • Prior transit or transportation experience.
  • Dependable and proficient in time management, meeting deadlines, and multitasking.
  • Flexible schedule availability, including early mornings or evenings.
  • Minimum of three years of supervisory experience.
  • Exceptional customer service skills and professional customer‑focused telephone manners.
Physical Requirements
  • Work outside in varying temperature, weather, and humidity conditions.
  • Sit for extended periods (up to 6–8 hours per day); frequently walk long distances on possible sloped or uneven surfaces.
  • Push and pull objects up to 50 pounds, occasionally lift material weighing up to 50 lbs. with or without assistance; occasionally bend, kneel, or crouch.
  • Withstand heavy traffic areas and tolerate exposure to dust, vehicle fumes, and noise.
  • Work shifts or a flexible schedule as needed.
  • Generally subjected to long periods spent sitting, typing, or looking at a computer screen.
  • Work environment combines both indoors and outdoors.
