In this position the successful candidate will play a key role in preserving artifacts for public education and enjoyment by overseeing the collection, inventory, cataloging, and exhibition of museum objects. Working collaboratively with curators, donors, and partner institutions, the successful candidate will help ensure the integrity, accessibility, and long‑term preservation of the museum’s collections.
POSITION SUMMARYResponsible for collection, inventory, cataloging and exhibition of historic materials and museum artifacts for the education and enjoyment of the public; responsible for all incoming and outgoing loans of objects to other entities; works with curators to identify objects for exhibits, events and/or projects and related programming for museum spaces or assigned collection.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThis is a technical class responsible for accession and preservation of objects donated or loaned to the museum. This class is distinguished from the Museum Director in that the latter is responsible for supervision and management of museum operations. This class is distinguished from Museum Curator in that the former has a primary focus on accessioning and preserving artifacts.
- Demonstrates regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
- Assists in the acquisition, preservation, and restoration of artifacts; ensures that such items are properly stored, transported, inventoried, and protected during display.
- Receives and inventories all new acquisitions according to professional standards to present before the accession committee; interacts with potential donors and maintains professional relationships with donors; serves as the museum staff member for the museum association’s accession committee; represents the museum with knowledge and expertise for all concerns regarding objects held by the museum.
- Accessions objects accepted by the museum; prepares deeds of gift for objects and works closely with donors to ensure forms are complete, safe delivery of objects is achieved, and return of objects to donor not accessioned into the collection;
- Photographs, provides detail descriptions of objects assigns object IDs and values and stores objects in preservation quality storage facility and systems.
- Provides general care and oversight of the museum three-dimensional collections by updating entries in data management system, photographing objects, rehousing objects, monitoring temperature and humidity of environment, conducts object valuations and continually updates values for risk management and insurance purposes.
- Works closely with outside entities requesting loan of objects from the museum; identifies objects available for loan; conducts outgoing condition report on each object designated for loan; prepares loan agreements and works closely with museum director determining length of loans; assists in packing and shipping of artifacts designated for loan; prepares incoming condition report when objects are returned and contacts and works closely conservators if required for repair of objects.
- Works closely with curator team to assist with exhibit design and updates to the museum with identification of suitable objects for potential museum exhibits; leads the effort to remove objects from exhibit when necessary for health and care of objects; assists in mounting of objects in new exhibits.
