Position Summary
Are you the go-to person for book and movie recommendations, with a passion for creating engaging experiences for adult learners? We're seeking a creative, collaborative, and enthusiastic professional to connect our community with reading, resources, and innovative programming. Our ideal candidate demonstrates knowledge of the recreational and informational needs of the community, will be able to successfully develop original and engaging programs, create and maintain dynamic displays, select materials of interest to adults, contribute online book recommendation lists, provide outreach to the community, assist with summer reading, and answer questions at our Circulation Desk.
The Churchill County Library places a high value on applicants who have formal education in Library Sciences. Those candidates who have obtained an ALA-accredited Master's in Library Science (MLS) will receive first consideration. The county will also give strong consideration to candidates who have obtained Public Library Certification from the State of Nevada or students in an ALA-accredited MLS program who have finished at least half the program and are continuing to work towards achieving their MLS.

The State of Nevada requires the person in this position to possess an MLS or the State of Nevada Public Librarian Certification.

Churchill County has an attractive compensation package that extends beyond just the salary. The county pays 100% of the retirement contribution to Nevada PERS on your behalf (36.75% over and above your wage, equivalent to $20,600/year). The county pays 100% of the employee-only health insurance premiums (equivalent to $12,800/year). AND you will not have Social Security taken out of your paycheck, which results in an additional 6% take-home pay (equivalent to $3,300/year).

Distinguishing Characteristics: This class is the professional level in the Library series, fully competent to perform the full range of professional librarian duties. The ability to instruct staff, students and the public in basic research and in using library automated systems is required. This class is distinguished from Library Director in that the latter performs managerial/supervisory duties.

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrates regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
  • Provides circulation services to patrons including checking materials in and out, discussing overdue fines with patrons, collecting fines, and contacting patrons regarding materials on hold: provides reference services to patrons in person, by telephone, and electronically; conducts research skills instruction.
  • Adds new materials to collection; unpacks and prepares materials for public use; reconciles packing slips/invoice; updates database system.
  • Coordinates the delivery of Children and Adult services/programming; assesses trends/needs and makes recommendations to the Library Director; involves patrons on program planning and implementing services and programs for their age group.
  • Provides direct public services to patrons, government employees, and a variety of other groups including senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, homebound individuals, and individuals for whom English is a second language; coordinates outreach programs, onsite visits and special events such as author book signings and education programs.
  • Assists in the delivery of public relations by preparation of promotional materials including video, print, and radio; may be solely responsible for programming targeted towards a specific patron group(s).
  • Coordinates collection development by selecting and de-selecting materials; assists in the collection evaluation and development of specific Library collections for subject areas; participates as a member of the Selection Committee.
