We are seeking a PRN Medical/Clinical Lab Scientist at Banner Churchill Community Hospital in Fallon, NV. This is a fantastic opportunity to do good work on behalf of better health in your local community.
Position SummaryThis position is responsible for a high level of technical knowledge and application of that knowledge to department testing, clinical relevance, and complex problem‑solving skills. The role serves as a department resource, assisting with compliance with all pertinent laboratory accrediting agencies and regulatory requirements (e.g., CLIA '88, JCAHO, CAP, OSHA). The scientist may be responsible for the collection, receipt, and processing of biological specimens into the laboratory.
Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards.
Core Functions- Performs testing in an accurate and timely manner with the required level of knowledge. Responsible for startup, calibration, and accuracy of procedures and instrumentation. Actively participates in problem‑solving activities, uses advanced decision‑making skills, and demonstrates advanced knowledge of computer systems and theory and clinical relevance testing.
- Recognizes and ensures validity of abnormal patient and/or QC results, monitors accuracy, participates in documenting deviations, and engages in process improvement and quality assurance activities.
- Monitors and controls inventory; assists in providing financial data, and participates in process improvements to reduce costs and improve productivity.
- Contributes to department/system projects, trains employees, participates in at least one committee or special project, and assists in new employee orientation and competency assessments as required.
- Serves as a department resource by providing educational information to internal and external customers, demonstrates advanced communication skills, attends staff meetings, and acts as a preceptor and coach.
- May process and/or prepare patient samples, including specimen collection, general laboratory specimen processing, and referral laboratory processing, ensuring correct patient and specimen identification and integrity.
- Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science/medical technology, OR
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical or biological science (transcripts may be reviewed to determine eligibility) AND certification (MLS or categorical).
- Foreign‑educated candidates must provide a detailed credential evaluation from IERF or other nationally recognized credentialing agency.
- For certain specialty disciplines only (Toxicology, HLA, HCTT, etc.) where no certification is available, a bachelor’s degree with one year of experience in that discipline is required.
- Demonstrated competency in phlebotomy where applicable.
- MLS/MT or categorical certification (ASCP, AMT, HEW, AAB).
- Basic knowledge of specimen requirements and medical terminology.
- Previous experience with phlebotomy and processing.
- Additional related education and/or experience.
