Position Summary

This position is responsible for the administration of physical therapy treatment under the supervision of a Physical Therapist, in accordance with physician referral, state and local standards, regulatory agencies, and departmental policies and procedures. The role demonstrates clinical competence and knowledge necessary to provide treatment appropriate to patient age groups.

Core Functions

Administers physical therapy treatment according to the plan of care established by the Physical Therapist. Implements individualized treatment plan with consideration of the patient’s needs. Provides skilled treatment in a safe manner. Monitors effectiveness and collaborates with the Physical Therapist to modify the plan when needed. Identifies key limiting factors, participates in discharge planning, involves patient and family in decisions, and provides ongoing education to the interdisciplinary team.

Demonstrates understanding of scope of practice. Documents communication with supervising Physical Therapist. Communicates significant changes in patient function or tolerance. Makes recommendations to the Physical Therapist on additions or modifications of orders. Provides input to modify/update treatment goals to be functional, measurable, patient‑related, reflecting limiting factors. Refers patients when skills of a Physical Therapist are required.

Documents according to departmental and regulatory standards. Completes documentation within the established time frames. Documents innovative, individualized treatment techniques. Documentation reflects comprehensive assessment of progress or lack of progress. Treatment goals are reassessed according to policy.

Communicates pertinent patient information to ensure continuity of care. Conveys treatment results and patient progress to physicians, nurses, patients, family and interdisciplinary team. Communicates in a clear and timely manner. Defends treatment rationale with standard practices or current literature.

Exhibits adaptability in assignments related to caseload, scheduling, and staffing shifts. Initiates assistance in other patient care areas and accepts responsibility for all patient care needs.

Demonstrates appropriate supervision and delegation of personnel to achieve safe, quality, cost‑effective patient care. Supervision and delegation of the Therapy Technician and PTA student comply with policies. Participates in training and orientation of new personnel. Assures competency of personnel prior to delegation of tasks.

Participates in department operational activities: attends staff meetings, follows up to obtain information, participates in process improvement, meets productivity standards.

Interacts with all levels of staff, departments, physicians, patients, families, and external contacts such as other health institutions and community providers regarding patient care. Also interacts with physician offices to report, clarify, or request information.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduated from a Physical Therapy Assistant program accredited by APTA or equivalent.
Current Physical Therapy Assistant license from the state of practice, if required; BLS certification required.
Demonstrated clinical competency, experience, training, and education during interview process.
Proficiency with patient care equipment and therapeutic modalities.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum of one year experience working as a Therapy Assistant.
Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
