Overview

Churchill County, located in Northern Nevada, is a community with agricultural roots, proximity to the Naval Air Station Fallon, and access to outdoor opportunities, Reno, Lake Tahoe, and nearby ski resorts. The Churchill County District Attorney’s office comprises seven attorneys, eight legal secretaries, and six child support workers. The office offers a family-friendly, flexible environment and is willing to consider applicants who are members of the bar in other states.

Position summary
:
The person in this position provides professional legal services involved in the prosecution of criminal cases in Nevada. Responsibilities include evaluating investigative reports, filing criminal cases, preparing pleadings and briefs, conducting legal research, examining and evaluating evidence, and prosecuting cases in the courts.

Distinguishing characteristics

This is an experienced level class responsible for completing complex legal assignments with seasoned judgment. It is distinguished from a supervisory level position. This is an at-will position serving at the pleasure of the District Attorney. The description outlines general duties and the essential functions under the Americans with Disabilities Act; incumbents may be asked to perform other duties as required.

To perform this job successfully, the incumbent must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Prepares and presents State’s evidence in criminal actions, including legal arguments regarding merit; argues on behalf of the State against writs of habeas corpus, petitions for post-conviction relief, and motions to suppress evidence.
  • Appears on behalf of the State in probation, revocation hearings, and sanity hearings; prepares and supervises the preparation of legal briefs filed on behalf of the State.
  • Presents plea negotiations with opposing attorneys.
  • Interviews and advises complainants and witnesses regarding prospective criminal action.
  • Performs legal research; interprets and applies laws, court decisions, and authorities for use in case preparation, opinions, and briefs for prosecution or defense.
  • Confers with and advises County officials, employees, and representatives on legal questions; drafts ordinances, resolutions, and other legislative measures; confers with investigators regarding facts and evidence collection.
  • Attends pre-trial lineups, arraignments, preliminary hearings, and trials; defends indigent clients in a variety of cases in County or State courts; dictates legal instruments, correspondence, and reports.
  • Maintains accurate records and files; prepares various records and reports.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit’s service to its customers by offering suggestions and participating as an active team member.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.

Education and experience

Juris Doctorate in Law and admission to practice in Nevada courts, or as provided by Supreme Court rule. Minimum of two years of experience as a licensed Nevada attorney.
