Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Aircraft Maintenance/ Mechanic
Position Summary
The Aircraft Mechanic–Powerplant performs organizational, intermediate and limited depot level maintenance, including inspection, operational test, repair, modification, and troubleshooting on all assigned aircraft, components, and equipment. Applies advanced technical knowledge to solve complex problems and provide technical assistance, guidance, and instruction to other employees as needed.
Responsibilities- Maintain all aircraft main, auxiliary, secondary power systems, fuel systems, engine level, and bleed air components.
- Perform troubleshooting, testing, low and high power turn operational checks of power plant systems; replace or repair worn or damaged components (fuel controls, fuel pumps, oil pumps, engine‑mounted gearboxes, compressor bleed valves) using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment.
- Remove engine from aircraft, disassemble and inspect organizational level parts for wear, cracks, security, or other defects; repair or replace defective parts, reassemble, and reinstall engine in aircraft.
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical directives, planning documents, test specifications, technical publications and procedures, and applicable safety manuals.
- Participate in off‑site service on assigned detachments as required.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum three years’ experience within the last eight years in the specific aircraft maintenance occupational field.
- Last two years in the military or with a government aviation maintenance contractor.
- Experience in corrosion detection, treatment and prevention.
- Qualified according to field of expertise and level of maintenance assigned.
- Must obtain/maintain required company/government clearances, qualifications or certifications.
- Prior Military must present Member 4 DD214 with Honorable Discharge.
- Valid State Driver’s License.
- Must obtain & maintain a Secret US Government Clearance; US Citizenship required.
- Ability to work all assigned shifts & schedules.
- Recent experience with F‑18A‑F, EA‑18G, E‑2C, MH‑60S aircraft.
- High degree of expertise of aircraft systems.
- In‑depth knowledge of applicable maintenance/technical manuals, publications, instructions and special tools and test equipment.
- Familiarity with operational capabilities and limitations of aircraft systems.
- Thorough working knowledge of detection, prevention and treatment of corrosion.
- Customer oriented and capable of cross‑training into other specialties.
- Formal/Specialized Training or Equivalent Hazardous Waste Communication Training.
- FOD and TCP Awareness.
- Trained Security Clearance Awareness Training.
- COMNAVAIRFORINST 4790.2 Program Awareness.
- NALCOMIS/OOMA trained (preferred).
- ESD Trained.
- Support Equipment Operator’s License (Tow Tractor, N2 Servicing Trailer, Mobile Start Unit).
- Collateral Duty Inspector experience (preferred).
- Egress System Checkout Plane Captain Qualified (preferred).
- Aircraft Towing Certified, Aircraft Brake Rider Certified.
- Operational Risk Management (ORM) Training.
- Fuel Surveillance Trained, Engine Run (1 T/M/S minimum).
- Troubleshooter/Final Checker Certified.
This classification activity is usually accomplished in a hangar/shop/flight line environment and requires the typical physical movements and postures associated with these activities. May be required to lift objects not exceeding 70pounds. Special vision abilities: close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust and focus. Work conditions may include low or no physical discomfort, or inclement weather, high noise hazards, fumes or airborne particles, electrical shock hazards.
