Fleet Services Mechanic

This position focuses on the servicing, maintaining, and repairing of automobiles and trucks from the various county departments. The Fleet Services Mechanic position is important in ensuring the county's work gets done. They diagnose, repair, and maintain a wide spectrum of vehicles that are used by the Sheriff, Parks and Recreation, Road, and other county departments. Their work involves planned maintenance as well as diagnosis and repair of unexpected vehicle and equipment malfunctions of engines, electrical systems, brakes, rear ends, and more.

Consider working for Churchill County! The county pays 100% of the retirement contribution to PERS on your behalf (36.75% over and above your wage, equivalent to $11.61/hour or over $24,100/year). The county pays 100% of the employee-only health insurance premiums (equivalent to $6.49/hour or $13,500/year). AND you will not have Social Security taken out of your paycheck, which results in an additional 6% take-home pay (equivalent to $1.89/hour or $3,900/year).

Distinguishing Characteristics This is a trade level classification that performs the most complex problem diagnosis and repair duties on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrates regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
  • Diagnoses, repairs and overhauls gas and diesel vehicles and motorized equipment to include gas and diesel engines, transmissions, specialized electronics, air conditioning, fuel, brake, steering and suspension systems.
  • Diagnoses, repairs and overhauls heavy equipment to include repairs on gas and diesel engines, electronic systems, hydraulics, cooling and fuel systems, brakes and steering.
  • Installs and repairs electrical and communications systems, and installs and repairs emergency flashing and strobe lighting on vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Fabricates parts for vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs inventory control and maintains sufficient stock, materials and supplies.
  • Performs road and field service repairs on vehicles and equipment to include tire service, battery jumps and fueling; services equipment at pit and ensures compliance with MSHA regulations.
  • Checks new equipment to ensure operational readiness and compliance to bid specifications.
  • Coordinates and performs preventative maintenance on all vehicles and equipment in department inventory; arranges for outside mechanical services as required.
  • Identifies repair parts; researches prices, quality and availability of parts; orders parts.
  • Prepares cost estimates and provides recommendations in regard to feasibility of major repairs.
  • Determines maintenance requirements for vehicles and equipment; provides recommendations for establishing maintenance levels and intervals.
  • Completes repair orders for billing and record keeping in regard to vehicle and equipment service, maintenance and repair history by utilizing department software.
  • Performs road maintenance and construction duties as required.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
