This position focuses on the servicing, maintaining, and repairing of automobiles and trucks from the various county departments. The Fleet Services Mechanic position is important in ensuring the county's work gets done. They diagnose, repair, and maintain a wide spectrum of vehicles that are used by the Sheriff, Parks and Recreation, Road, and other county departments. Their work involves planned maintenance as well as diagnosis and repair of unexpected vehicle and equipment malfunctions of engines, electrical systems, brakes, rear ends, and more.

The county pays 100% of the employee-only health insurance premiums (equivalent to $6.49/hour or $13,500/year). AND you will not have Social Security taken out of your paycheck, which results in an additional 6% take-home pay (equivalent to $1.89/hour or $3,900/year).

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is a trade level classification that performs the most complex problem diagnosis and repair duties on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.

Education and Experience

High School diploma/GED plus formal course work in vehicle maintenance; AND five (5) years of experience in general automotive and heavy equipment repair and maintenance, with a minimum five years of experience in heavy equipment repair, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Knowledge and Skills

• Methods, techniques, parts, tools and materials used in the maintenance and repair of gasoline- and diesel-powered automobiles, trucks and construction equipment.
• Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment common to the field.
• Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
• Shop mathematics.
• Record keeping practices.
• Computer applications related to the work.
• Job estimation and supervisory principles and practices.
• Communicating effectively in oral and written forms.

Skill in:

• Servicing and performing preventive maintenance and repair for a variety of fleet vehicles and construction equipment.
• Diagnosing and repairing a wide variety of diesel- and gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment.
• Performing road construction and maintenance tasks.
• Operating and maintaining a variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment used in the work.
• Using the hand and power tools of the work skillfully and safely.
• Preparing records and reports of work performed.
• Reading and interpreting manuals, specifications and drawings.
• Understanding and following oral and written directions.
• Estimating necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments.
• Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
• Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities.

Required Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

• Nevada Class A Driver's License with tanker, doubles and triples endorsements.
• Flagger and Work Zone Safety certification within six (6) months of date of employment.
• First Aid and CPR certification within six (6) months of date of employment.
• MSHA Part 46 certification within six (6) months of date of employment.
• OSHA 10 certification within six (6) months of date of employment.
