Position: HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKER 4

Job Overview

The Nevada Department of Transportation is recruiting to fill the Highway Maintenance Worker 4 position in Cold Springs Maintenance Yard, 60 miles outside of Fallon, NV. This is a lead position and assumes the responsibilities of the supervisor in their absence. The primary duties include assisting the supervisor in planning and scheduling routine maintenance activities such as fence repair, guardrail repair, asphalt patching & repair, concrete repair, etc.,

and supporting the agency’s snow removal and maintenance efforts during seasonal betterments. On‑site housing is available for selected applicants.

Qualifications
  • High school graduation or equivalent education and one year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker III in Nevada State service; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certification by NDOT to operate a variety of complex or specialized highway maintenance and construction equipment for restoring and maintaining roadway surfaces, roadside slopes, shoulders, culverts, and ditches and repairing or replacing appurtenances such as guardrails, markers, guideposts, and fences.
  • Experience operating and performing preventive maintenance and minor repair on light, medium, and heavy‑duty highway maintenance and construction equipment such as rotary snowplow, motor grader, crawler/tractor, backhoe/grade‑all, truck‑mounted asphalt distributor, chip spreader, cold planer, paint striper, vacuum sweeper, and culvert cleaner.
  • Ability to act as designated certified operator for certification of Highway Maintenance Worker I’s and II’s, demonstrate and oversee equipment operation, and provide training in safety policies and procedures.
  • Experience installing long line, solid and skip lines and gore lines, measuring and installing permanent and temporary pavement markings, applying chip and flush seals, performing milling and inlays with hot asphalt, mixing salt and sand stockpiles, operating loaders and snow equipment, and constructing and maintaining brine‑making facilities.
  • Knowledge of traffic control methods, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), Incident Command System protocols, emergency response outside normal working hours, and preparing required incident documentation.
  • Skill in installing, repairing, and replacing roadway signs and signposts, maintaining fixtures on lighted sign structures, and cleaning or replacing overhead sign panels.
  • Monitoring contract compliance, quality control of contractor work, testing of materials, and verification of work completion.
  • Maintenance of landscaped areas and roadside vegetation, troubleshooting tree wells, removing debris and biohazards, responding to accidents and fatalities, and completing required forms.
  • Ability to perform related duties as assigned.
Responsibilities

Under general supervision, incumbents function as lead workers and as an assistant to the Highway Maintenance Supervisor I. They plan and schedule maintenance activities including determining required equipment and materials, assigning personnel, and completing required records. As the assistant supervisor, they assign and review the work of lower‑level personnel, provide input into performance evaluations, assist in laying out roadway or specialty maintenance work, organize equipment, materials, and personnel, and respond to emergencies.

Detailed knowledge areas include materials, methods, and equipment used in reconstructing, renovating, or repairing highway roadbeds; pruning and watering techniques for landscaped areas; traffic paint and bead materials and their retro‑reflectivity; hazardous material isolation zones; maintenance management systems; dust control techniques; protection of endangered species habitats; environmental regulations affecting job sites; and incident command system operations during emergencies.

Commercial Driver Licensing (CDL) requirements apply.
