Early Childhood Center Assistant Teacher

Employment Status: Part-time, Non-Exempt

Reports to: Lead Classroom Teacher, School Director

Hours: 20 hours per week

Pay and Benefits: $17.50 - $19.50 per hour, Paid time off, Employee Discount, Access to retirement plan

About Us
Temple Rodef Shalom is a Reform Jewish congregation located in Northern Virginia, just outside of Washington, DC. Since our founding in 1962, we have grown into the largest Jewish congregation in Virginia, serving nearly 1,800 households. Each week, we are bustling with activity, serving nearly 200 students in our Early Childhood Center, nearly 800 students in our Religious School, over 300 campers (ages 4-13) and nearly 150 staff each summer,, as well as hundreds of people who walk through our doors to pray, sing, learn, connect, and mark life cycle moments.

Temple Rodef Shalom Early Childhood Center has celebrated over 50 years of working with children and embraces the Reggio Emilia philosophy, a child‑centered and experience‑driven approach to learning. Assistant teachers are a key partner on the classroom teaching team, working to support and given direction by the lead teacher.

About You
You enjoy creating a supportive and joyful learning environment for children and their families and can embrace working in a Jewish setting where traditions and holidays are celebrated. You are reliable and appreciate the responsibility of caring for young children, maintaining a high level of professionalism and privacy. You are flexible, able to adapt to program or schedule changes and willing to doing different tasks as needed, ensuring smooth transitions for students and a seamless classroom experience.

You are a learner yourself, willing to accept supervision from the lead teacher and administration team to grow and improve as a teacher.

  • Assist the lead teacher in:
    • Establishing and maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment
    • Advancing physical and intellectual competence
    • Supporting social and emotional development
    • Empowering children to think creatively, solve problems independently, and learn to respect themselves and others
    • Preparing the learning environment with needed materials
    • Promoting the school philosophy, goals and values stated in the Employee Handbook
  • Treat each child with dignity and respect, considering each child's individual needs
  • Maintain school materials and reports items that need repairs
  • Help with general classroom housekeeping
  • Help supervise the class when the lead teacher is absent
  • Participate in faculty meetings, workshops, and professional development opportunities
  • Respond to professional emails within 24 hours
  • Maintain strict confidentiality concerning children and their families.
  • Refer families to the lead teacher regarding any questions about their children

Additional Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • High school diploma required
  • Must fulfill the minimum requirements put forth by Virginia Department of Education
  • Experience working with children Preferred. preferred
  • Must be comfortable with small and digital technology
  • Must be physically able to perform the job of a school assistant teacher, which requires standing for extended periods of time, walking, bending, stooping, crawling and sitting on the floor with children.
