Overview
A member of the Commercial Credit team that partners with senior team members supporting the duties of underwriting and the on-going monitoring of a portfolio of credit relationships. Responsible for performing supporting analysis, identifying risk issues, and completing sections of credit analysis, as needed, to assess the creditworthiness of commercial clients.
Responsibilities- Facilitate the credit needs of customers by analyzing new requests and material modifications from deal screen through approval and for the life of the loan.
- Manage ongoing credit risk of existing loan portfolios through continuous credit monitoring (CCM) activities, enabling timely identification of emerging credit risk to manage risk, minimize losses, and assign accurate risk ratings.
- Execute CCM program activities including annual reviews, interim update memos, covenant monitoring program, problem loan management, early warning indicators, and other forms of credit surveillance.
- Review all pertinent credit and financial information, including financial statements, tax returns, due diligence reports, credit bureaus, appraisals, internal credit information, industry research, and peer data.
- Determine need for more thorough investigation or additional information.
- Analyze financial information and related materials and complete credit analyses for the Bank’s commercial transactions.
- Prepare written analyses that include an independent credit quality assessment with well-supported risk rating, identification of credit risks and mitigants, industry concerns, market and financial trends, and other pertinent credit issues of respective deals.
- Make appropriate structure recommendations based on analysis of scenarios including company’s case, bank’s base case, and a downside case.
- Identify suspicious activity or activity contrary to customer’s interests in existing portfolios.
- Partner proactively with relationship managers throughout the credit process to maintain timely and accurate risk ratings for a portfolio of commercial credits.
- Spread financial statements and prepare financial / projection models to sensitize various conditions impacting the transaction.
- Prepare cash flow, collateral schedules, covenant sensitivity calculations, and guarantor statement analysis as appropriate.
- Enter complete and accurate data into Bank systems to support underwriting and portfolio management.
- Attend client/prospect calls with RMs to understand the client/business to analyze and underwrite the transaction.
- Recommend risk rating based on underwriting parameters.
- Present analysis or address questions during credit request discussions or committee presentations.
- Assist in monitoring credit policy compliance by verifying adherence to the Commercial Credit Policy and commenting on risks associated with non‑compliance.
- Understand and adhere to applicable compliance/operational risk controls in accordance with company or regulatory standards and policies.
- Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
- Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points and issues raised by external regulators.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Commercial Credit is responsible for the credit delivery of the Bank's commercial clients throughout the credit lifecycle. Credit assessments range from initial analyses of new relationships to material modifications or restructurings of long‑term relationships and ongoing monitoring through the life of the loan. Commercial Credit also ensures the accurate completion of the Bank's risk rating scorecards and financial statement spreads. The work completed is used to make credit decisions for new, renewed, or amended credit transactions.
The position interacts with commercial banking relationship managers throughout the bank’s footprint and industry verticals, with customer interaction expected.
