Inova Schar Cancer Institute’s Fairfax location is looking for a dedicated Oncology Nurse Navigator to join the team working within the GI Oncology space. This role will be full‑time day shift from Monday to Friday, with a schedule of Monday to Friday and regular day shift hours. The Fairfax clinic is not open on weekends or Inova‑recognized holidays.

The Oncology Nurse Navigator provides safe, therapeutic care in a holistic and systematic way across the health system and continuum of care and in the community for past, current, and potential cancer patients. They guide patients and families through the health system from diagnosis, testing, treatment, and follow‑up care, assisting patients with navigating the continuum of care. The Navigator acts as a liaison, advocate, and point of contact for patients and family members, helping them access the best healthcare outcomes from doctors, hospitals, and other providers.

They may assist patients and families with resolving financial, psychosocial, functional, and administrative issues by advising of options and referring to appropriate resources. The Navigator also serves as an advisor/educator by providing emotional support, counseling, clinical education, resources, and expert guidance to patients and families to promote their ability to understand and meaningfully participate in the healthcare process and in personal decision‑making.

They facilitate and oversee the care delivery for patients under the direction of the department manager.

• Anticipate patient needs and advocate for patient rights and appropriate utilization of services. Build working relationships with patients, healthcare providers, and community resources to maximize patient outcomes and identify/resolve barriers to the plan of care.
• Conduct ongoing promotion of healthcare programs to community‑based resources, including developing written materials and public presentations describing activities related to patient care and research. Coordinate community health programs and cancer‑related education and groups.
• Conduct comprehensive assessment of the patient's health and psycho‑social needs, and develop a case management plan in collaboration with the patient and their support system. Assess patient needs and coordinate multidisciplinary care, serving as a clinical consultant to the health care team.
• Coordinate a patient’s plan of care, including answering patient questions regarding disease process and plan of care, scheduling appointments when appropriate, assisting with referral processes, and providing community resources. Coordinate patient discharge from hospital to ensure adherence to SOPs. Maintain a working knowledge of available community resources and financial services for providing clinical care, and knowledge of appropriate referrals. Educate patients and family members regarding disease process.
• Complete documentation related to pre‑testing, plan, written consent, orders and outcome according to policy; communicate verbally or in writing to other team members.

• Certification – Basic Life Support; certification in oncology within 2 years of hire
• Licensure – Licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Registered Nurse
• Experience – 3 years of progressive nursing experience with primary care management of patient populations
• Education – Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing

• Previous oncology experience
• Previous experience with GI patients
