The research geologist will examine variables related to igneous/metamorphic mineral origins, sedimentary pathways, continental shelf evolution and offshore heavy mineral distribution on the U.S. Atlantic Margin. Based on those findings the research geologist will write an original manuscript to be published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

Heavy minerals are sedimentary deposits of dense minerals that accumulate with sand, silt, and clay in coastal environments. These heavy minerals deposits are important potential sources of critical and economic minerals. The research geologist will be a recognized expert in the field of marine geology. S/he will serve as the lead author on a scientific journal article regarding the distribution of offshore heavy minerals along the U.S. Atlantic Margin.

The research geologist will be responsible for all major components of the manuscript including: conception, literature review, data analysis, interpretation, figure generation, writing and revising the manuscript per USGS Bureau Approval guidelines and the reviews of the scientific journal. The candidate must be knowledgeable of USGS' Fundamental Science Practices (FSP), including the review process and IPDS system. The candidate must successfully pass a background check.

Prior expert-level work experience on regional marine geology of the U.S. Atlantic Margin is necessary.

As-needed travel may be required to participate in multi-partner technical meetings focused on Atlantic coastal marine minerals research.
