AboutThe Role
Our staffing firm is partnering with a well-established electrical products distributor headquartered in Fargo, ND to identify a detail-oriented Sales Tax Accountant. Our client is a leading supplier in the electrical distribution industry, serving contractors, industrial customers, and utility partners across the region. This position plays a key role in supporting the day-to-day operations of the Sales Tax Department, ensuring compliance with multi-state sales tax regulations while providing accurate and timely reporting.
Job DescriptionThe Sales Tax Accountant supports the Sales Tax Department by preparing and remitting monthly sales tax returns, resolving sales tax inquiries, and maintaining customer exemption records. This role collaborates with internal departments, branch employees, and state agencies to ensure accurate sales tax administration and compliance.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare and review monthly sales tax returns and remit sales tax payments to the appropriate state Revenue Departments.
- Contact state sales tax agencies and respond to sales tax policy questions from customers, corporate departments, and branch employees.
- Adjust sales tax on customer invoices upon receipt of supporting documentation, including rebilling invoices and clearing adjustments from customer accounts.
- Maintain customer sales tax exemption certificates.
- Partner with the manager or Team Lead to prepare information and documentation for sales tax audits.
- Assign and categorize incoming requests received in the Sales Tax Inbox.
- Review selected sales tax returns on a monthly basis to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Assist the manager with monthly metrics reporting as assigned.
- Support education and training of branch and corporate department personnel on sales and use tax matters.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or designate.
Required Qualifications
- Prior knowledge of general accounting functions and practices.
- Working knowledge of PC Windows, Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint), internet, and email applications.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for interacting with internal teams, customers, and state agencies.
- Four-year degree in accounting, finance, or business administration, or the equivalent in work experience.
- Experience with SAP software.
- Prior experience preparing multi-state sales and use tax returns.
- Familiarity with sales tax exemption certificate management and audit support.
