Position: Dental Assistant - Recruitment/Relocation Incentive Authorized

Overview

The Fargo VA Health Care System is recruiting for 1 full‑time Dental Assistant for the Surgical Care service line. A recruitment/relocation incentive may be authorized for highly qualified candidates.

Qualifications
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
  • Experience and Education (1)

    Experience:

    Six months experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work – or provides familiarity with the work.
  • Education (2):
    Successful completion of a 1‑year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
  • Experience/Education Combination (3):
    Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying.
  • Certification:
    Public law 97‑35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Candidates must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds those standards and be certified as radiographers in their field.
  • Provisions for Certification of Radiologic Competence:
    • Successful completion of the Dental Radiation Health and Safety Examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board – Inc.
    • OR – Successful completion of the Principles and Practice of Dental Radiology and Radiographic Safety courses and examinations developed by the Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Dentistry.
    • OR – Successful completion of a radiation health and safety program or examination approved by a state board of dentistry or the Department of Defense (DoD).
  • Non‑certified applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate dental assistant under the authority of 38 U.S.C. §7405(a)(1)(D). Failure to obtain certification during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment, which may result in removal from the GS‑681 series and termination of employment.
  • DANB certification is not required – but highly desirable for the appointment of Dental Assistants up to and including the full performance level.
  • English language proficiency:
    Dental assistants must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2 – section D – paragraph 5a of the policy.
  • Grade determinations: GS‑3, GS‑4, and GS‑5 requirements, including experience, education, and knowledge‑skills‑abilities descriptions, are detailed above.
  • GS‑6 (full performance level) requires at least 1 year of experience at the next lower level and demonstration of advanced KSAs in anatomy, instruments, procedures, vital signs, patient education, image capture, and electronic records.
  • All qualifying experience must be clearly described in the application package. Failure to demonstrate experience may result in disqualification.

Duties
  • Perform chairside dental assistant duties in all phases of restorative, prosthodontic, surgical, endodontic, and periodontal treatment as provided in the dental clinic or operating room.
  • Operate dental X‑ray equipment to take intra‑ and extra‑oral radiographs.
  • Assist in training students from affiliated schools – observing and advising them as they perform their duties.
  • Responsible for clinic and dental equipment maintenance, stocking of supplies, and appropriate record keeping.
  • Duties include, but are not limited to: chairside assisting, dental imaging, infection control and equipment reprocessing, clinic support, patient safety, employee education, dental laboratory functions, direct patient care, operating room support, and dispensing and administering medications from Omnicell under doctor's orders.
  • Work schedule:

    Monday–Friday 7:15 a.m.–3:45 p.m. or 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
