Position

Purpose:

This position is for 10 hours a week, allowing a flexible schedule Monday-Friday. Mentors help and support Native American students. Focus areas include student academic achievement, school attendance, school connectedness, physical-social-emotional-mental wellness, school-family partnership, and Native American culture. This job will consist of flexible hours needed to fulfill the responsibilities outlined. This position will help at-risk students improve their academic skills as well as provide a model for social and emotional wellness.

Responsibilities

1. Academic Support: works directly and collaboratively with a caseload of individual Native American students and their families, and school staff, with a focus on improving student academic skills.

Priority:
Essential Percent of Time: 90%

Examples of this work include:

* Establishes a communication system with the Native American Coordinator for specific programming units that require tutoring, regarding specific duties and responsibilities.

* Serves as an academic resource for the student as well as a connection between the regular school instructional staff and the student and/or family.

* Collaborates with school administration, counselors, teachers, school staff, and Native American Education Program staff to facilitate connection to the larger district personnel.

* Facilitate Warrior Circle groups (talking circles) with students to build a positive cultural identity and self-esteem.

* Maintains accurate records and documentation to fulfill grant requirements.

2. Other Duties:
Carries out other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or Native American Coordinator.·

Priority:
Secondary Percent of Time: 10%

* Examples of this work include:

* Special projects with the Native American Education Coordinator office as assigned.

* Attends professional development workshops appropriate to the position, including all mandatory district training.

Minimum Qualifications

* High School Diploma or GED.

* Previous experience working or volunteering in a K-12 school setting.

* Ability to communicate with students, colleagues, and parents/guardians.

* Basic academic and computer skills.

* Knowledge of Native American culture, history, values, and communities.

Preferred Qualifications

* · Currently enrolled in a post-secondary degree program.

* Ability to work without continued supervision and directions.

This position reports to the Native American Education Coordinator.

Personal contact with students, parents/guardians, and coworkers is an essential part of the position and requires the ability to share information, empathize, and maintain professional boundaries. The position may handle confidential and private data.

The incumbent takes initiative to ensure completion of all tasks and will adjust priorities to accommodate competing workload demands.

The incumbent performs tasks under the direction of the Native American Coordinator. Programing questions and other issues are referred to the Native American Coordinator or Building Principal.

All employees must comply with department and institution procedures and policies, Fargo Public School policies and procedures, as well as local, state and federal laws, regulations, guidelines and business and industry standards.
