Position Purpose

Under the direction of the Principal, the Dean of Students serves as an instructional leader in the planning, coordination, and administration of school activities and programs, including curriculum, instruction, assessment, student conduct and attendance, and co‑curricular programs, school plant operations, and the supervision and evaluation of assigned personnel.

Responsibilities

1. Instructional Leadership:
Assists the Principal in providing instructional leadership to the school. Performs a variety of administrative duties to assist the Principal in managing the school; assumes the duties of the Principal or Assistant Principal in the absence of the Principal and as assigned.

  • Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the school and fosters good interpersonal relations among students and staff.
  • Supervises and evaluates the performance of designated certificated and/or classified personnel; assigns duties to faculty and staff as appropriate to meet school objectives; assists with the recruiting, interviewing, and selection of new faculty and staff.
  • Provides direction to a variety of faculty, staff, and student programs and services; participates in formal and informal classroom visitations and observations; provides recommendations and suggestions for improvement as appropriate.

2. Student Management:
Develops appropriate procedures for the discipline, attendance, health, and safety of the children assigned to the school.

  • Develops and administers disciplinary procedures in accordance with district policies and state laws; receives referrals and confers with students, parents, teachers, community agencies, and law enforcement; responds to and resolves parent, student, and staff concerns and complaints; serves on discipline or expulsion panels as assigned.
  • Assume responsibility for the implementation and observance of all Board Policies and Regulations by the school's staff and students.
  • Serves as alternative LEA for Individual Educational Plans and 504s, and participates as needed in IEP, 504 or MTSS meetings.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of intervention programs that address the needs of at‑risk students.
  • Trains and supports the implementation of restorative practices with all school staff, as well as facilitates restorative conferencing and mediation when conflict/harm occurs between students, staff, staff and students, and families and staff.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of re‑entry of students returning from disciplinary events and works with PBTs to create student behavior intervention plans.
  • Collects data to assist in improving programming and outcomes for students.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Carries out supervisory responsibilities given to him/her by the principal in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

  • Interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees and students; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Supervises students on campus before, during, and after school; monitors students during lunch, recess, passing periods, and other activities; instructs students in appropriate behavior; disciplines students in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Conducts fire and other emergency drills in accordance with state and local regulations.
  • Exerts leadership ensuring the effective implementation of the district‑adopted curriculum.
  • Assists in supervision of curricular and co‑curricular programs and school sponsored events.
  • Directs school point of contact for primary bussing communication and discipline.
  • Works closely with school nurse and admin to monitor student health plans and administer student medication.
