  • Full-Scope Midwifery Practice:
    Provide comprehensive care including prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and gynecologic services.
  • Collaborative Role:
    Partner closely with our OBGYN team to support:
    • Postpartum care for all OB patients
    • Initial triage of all patients presenting to the Family Birth Center
  • Predictable Weekly

    Schedule:
    • 1 day of outpatient clinic (Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM)
    • 1 dedicated 24-hour inpatient shift per week
  • Call Commitment:
    Light call rotation (approximately 2–4 shifts/month)
    • Call is for CNM patients only – no cross-coverage

Summary

Provides midwifery care for patients with obstetric and gynecologic needs during labor, delivery and postpartum. Identifies additional needs for mothers and babies in birthing units.

Job Description
  • Monitors patients' condition during pregnancies, including co-management of high-risk pregnancies, and performs examinations and procedures.
  • Monitor fetal development by listening to fetal heartbeat, taking external uterine measurements, identifying fetal position, or estimating fetal size and weight.
  • Maintain and record information in medical records or provide narrative summaries to communicate patient information to other health care providers.
  • Provide guidance to expectant mothers in prenatal self-care (nutrition, weight gain, daily activity levels).
  • Provide prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn, inter-conceptional, well-woman, and gynecologic care and education for women and their families.
  • Maintain records of patient conditions and test results within care plans.
  • May order and interpret diagnostic or laboratory tests and prescribe medications as permitted by state regulations.
  • Practices midwifery as a CNM or CM, encompassing a full range of primary health care services for women from adolescence beyond menopause.
  • Provide primary care, gynecologic and family planning services, preconception care, care during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum period, and newborn care up to 28 days old; manage care in partnership with women and families in diverse settings.
  • Conduct physical examinations; prescribe medications including controlled substances and contraceptive methods; admit, manage and discharge patients; order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests; facilitate use of medical devices.
  • Provide health promotion, disease prevention, and individualized wellness education and counseling.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree, Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD) level education required from an approved ACNM/AMCB-accredited program.
  • Current unencumbered APRN license (CNM) per state requirements; maintain RN license and APRN CNM licensure where practice occurs; multistate licensure if in an NLC state.
  • Pass certification examination as required by the state board.
  • Appointment at Sanford facility and scope of practice approved.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required;
    Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
  • DEA registration number required.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Obtain and maintain required department-specific competencies and certifications; privileging documents may supersede this description where applicable.
