Position: Category Buyer I or II (Electrical Cable)

Overview

The Category Buyer I or II is responsible for leading and acting as the point of contact for the end‑to‑end purchasing life cycle of materials, including planning and executing purchase orders, determining transport, executing agreements, expediting material and resolving quality and invoice issues. This position ensures materials are purchased at the lowest total cost consistent with quality, reliability of source, and urgency of need.

The Category Buyer partners with the Category team to build and leverage category strategies, manage supplier performance, and maintains excellent vendor and internal customer relationships.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and adjust purchase orders based on requisitions, project insights, drawing take‑offs, billing of materials (BOM), and inventory strategies.
  • Lead initiatives to expedite purchase order tracking and monitoring, mitigating problems and delays, and communicating impacts to planners and project managers.
  • Distribute and facilitate day‑to‑day communication with suppliers to ensure on‑time delivery and data integrity.
  • Communicate site access maps and transport information to suppliers.
  • Ensure supplier compliance with safety, quality, and performance requirements.
  • Build strong knowledge of assigned category, including manufacturing processes, key supplier capabilities, pricing, and should‑cost models.
  • Stay abreast of new and emerging technologies related to procurement practices and assigned category.
  • Review spend trends and market projections to support sourcing decisions and maintain competitiveness.
  • Facilitate internal and external meetings to manage, track, and expedite orders.
  • Maintain clear communication with internal stakeholders regarding deviations from best practices when project delivery dates are at risk.
  • Verify requisition data and resolve discrepancies through detailed communication with requisitioners and suppliers.
  • Participate in vendor negotiations and identify deviations from standard contract terms.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders (legal, commercial services, permitting, insurance, accounting, preconstruction) to ensure contract compliance.
  • Own the purchase order book, ensuring data cleanliness and reliability from requisition to payment.
  • Oversee vendor submittals related to materials, resolve issues, and support project schedules.
  • Participate in regular business reviews with suppliers to assess safety, quality, timeliness, and competitiveness.
  • Maintain procurement data, support KPI reporting, and assist with project closeout activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Category Buyer I – Qualifications

Education and Work Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Finance, or an equivalent combination.
  • One or more years of related experience in purchasing, planning, or a related supply‑chain function.
  • Experience with in construction industries preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of construction processes, materials, purchasing processes, and procedures.
  • Data analysis and problem‑solving skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to be accurate, precise and follow set procedures and standards.
  • Collaboration and strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 25%.
Category Buyer II – Qualifications

Education and Work Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business or Finance, or an equivalent combination.
  • Three or more years of related experience in purchasing, planning, or a related supply‑chain function.
  • Experience with in construction industries preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Strong knowledge of sourcing strategies, terms and conditions, and commodity markets for assigned categories.
