Scope of Responsibility:
Responsible for the quality and accuracy of his/her own work. Responsible for the care and safe operation of a variety of equipment with high monetary value, responsible for leading a work crew of Traffic Technicians and seasonal temporary employees and private contractors carrying out crew activities.
* Troubleshoots, diagnoses and conducts repairs and maintenance on street lights and faulty cables when malfunctions occur and determines appropriate method of correction.
* Locates faults using diagnostic tools;
* Disassembles lights and/or cables and makes repairs, replaces parts and assemblies, and/or coordinates the repair and replacement;
* Performs routine maintenance on street lights such as inspecting and replacing missing or broken covers and fixtures, painting and tightening bases;
* Responds to calls of damaged, downed or malfunctioning lights;
* Assesses malfunction or damage and the threat to public safety;
* Isolates connection and performs or coordinates the repair of lights and the repair, removal and replacement of damaged poles, with crew and/or contractor;
* Makes recommendations for replacement of old wiring, new conduit, etc.;
* Documents work performed including costs; provides documentation to supervisor.
* Troubleshoots and conducts repairs and maintenance of traffic signals.
* Assists with prioritizing calls from Police department and work orders from traffic engineers;
* Responds to calls of damaged, downed or malfunctioning signals;
* Assesses malfunction or damage and the threat to public safety;
* Takes corrective action in the repair or replacement, or coordinates the removal and replacement of damaged signals with crew and/or contractor;
* Isolates connection, troubleshoots power source, controller, conflict monitor, component and other malfunctions using a variety of test meters and analyzers;
* Replaces lamps, cleans, adjusts signals and tests signal components; connects and disconnects wiring on live circuits; removes, tests, and installs parts; arranges for materials needed;
* Re-sets traffic signals and load switches; downloads and installs signal programs from shop or field laptop computers to signal controllers;
* Inspects and tests signals, mast arms, fiber optics, conflict monitors and other equipment according to schedule and checklists; performs follow-up repairs as needed or contacts supervisor for direction;
* Repairs and sets ranges for emergency pre-emption system used by emergency vehicles;
* Documents work in daily report.
* Performs cable maintenance and services as requested.
* Splices and repairs cables that have been damaged by contractors.
* Cuts cables to allow for Water department work and splices cables together.
* Performs cable maintenance and services as requested.

* Assists in new construction projects for traffic signals and street lights.
* Coordinates with contracts on planning for installation of new street lights and poles;
* Reviews plans and inspects new construction installations of connectors, poles, bases, wiring and all other traffic signal equipment;
* Prepares punch list and conducts follow-up checks.
* Sets up proper lane closures for work areas according to established guidelines or coordinate traffic control to ensure safety.
* Maintains inventory of equipment, tools and supplies including poles, fixtures, wires, lamps, connectors, traffic signal equipment, etc.
* Performs physical inventory and maintains paper records;
* Determines items to be ordered; completes and submits necessary forms;
* Obtains items according to established procedures.
* Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions.
* Communicates with others in the work unit to provide information relating to work assignments and progress of work or to convey information about conditions or work related needs;
* Occasionally interacts with the public, vendors, and across departments to exchange basic fact information as requested or as necessary to perform job duties.
* Provides work instruction to crews of regular Traffic Maintenance Technicians, seasonal/temporary workers and private contractors regarding tasks to be performed;
