Scope of Responsibility
Responsible for the quality and accuracy of his/her own work. Responsible for the care and safe operation of a variety of equipment with high monetary value, responsible for leading a work crew of Traffic Technicians and seasonal temporary employees and private contractors carrying out crew activities.
- Locates faults using diagnostic tools;
- Disassembles lights and/or cables and makes repairs, replaces parts and assemblies, and/or coordinates the repair and replacement;
- Performs routine maintenance on street lights such as inspecting and replacing missing or broken covers and fixtures, painting and tightening bases;
- Responds to calls of damaged, downed or malfunctioning lights;
- Assesses malfunction or damage and the threat to public safety;
- Isolates connection and performs or coordinates the repair of lights and the repair, removal and replacement of damaged poles, with crew and/or contractor;
- Assists with prioritizing calls from Police department and work orders from traffic engineers;
- Responds to calls of damaged, downed or malfunctioning signals;
- Assesses malfunction or damage and the threat to public safety;
- Takes corrective action in the repair or replacement, or coordinates the removal and replacement of damaged signals with crew and/or contractor;
- Splices and repairs cables that have been damaged by contractors.
- Cuts cables to allow for Water department work and splices cables together.

- Coordinates with contracts on planning for installation of new street lights and poles;
- Reviews plans and inspects new construction installations of connectors, poles, bases, wiring and all other traffic signal equipment;
- Prepares punch list and conducts follow-up checks.
- Performs physical inventory and maintains paper records;
- Determines items to be ordered; completes and submits necessary forms;
- Obtains items according to established procedures.
- Communicates with others in the work unit to provide information relating to work assignments and progress of work or to convey information about conditions or work related needs;
- Occasionally interacts with the public, vendors, and across departments to exchange basic fact information as requested or as necessary to perform job duties.
Ensures that each employee:
- Follows department and city rules as well as sound work and safety practices in order to accomplish the job objectives and avoid injury or loss;
- Wears proper protective equipment when policy requires or conditions indicate a need exists and utilizes proper body mechanics and ergonomics while performing work;
- When potentially unsafe conditions are observed makes efforts to avoid or correct them if they are controllable and draws them to the attention of the responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner.
