Job Summary

This job is FIRST open to employees of this agency who are in the Human Services Technician classification and are eligible to bid. Other qualified applicants will be considered if there are no eligible bidders. This position is eligible for an additional shift differential of $2.25 between the hours of 6pm-6am.

THIS POSITION IS A 10-MONTH PER YEAR (36 hour weekly) POSITION - SCHEDULE IS BASED ON THE SCHOOL CALENDAR

Provide supervision of student(s) in the residential area and other duties as assigned at the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf.

Positions at the State Academy for the Deaf require signing skills. Candidates will be assessed for signing skills prior to hire.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
  • A passing score on a valid and reliable formal assessment (Parapro or Para educator) demonstrating the knowledge and ability to assist with instruction in reading/language, writing, mathematics or readiness for each OR the ability to pass the Parapro or Para educator assessment within the first 6 months of hire.
  • Knowledge or experience working with students in an educational and/or dormitory setting or in a similar setting as a caregiver.
  • Ability to read and write English sufficient to understand and follow directions and to maintain records and documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in conversational sign language (to be assessed prior to offer of hire).
  • Human relations skills sufficient to establish rapport with and provide direction to residential students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in writing basic reports, do basic arithmetic, and read and interpret charts and graphs.
  • Ability to perform emergency procedures and personal safety techniques.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced ASL Skills
  • Previous experience/background working with deaf/hard of hearing students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in therapeutic intervention, first aid/CPR.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with assistance.
  • Must be able to walk/stand for at least eight hours.

  • Successful completion of a Criminal Background Check within the past 12 months.
