Building Security Monitor

General Definition of Work:
The Building Security Monitor is responsible for student supervision in and around school grounds: before, during, and after the school day. Implementation of positive and consistent expectations will provide both emotional and physical safety to each individual student. The Security Monitor will respond to emergencies, intervene in conflicts, and work with building administration to direct students and staff in crisis situations.

The building security monitor will help build positive relationships with students, provide student check in’s, provide student supervision, and ensure student safety.

Essential Functions
  • Familiarize students with and enforce appropriate and expected behavioral guidelines and consequences for behavior in the building and on the grounds.
  • Monitors school hallways, study areas, common areas, including lunchrooms and restrooms, grounds, and parking lots to ensure that students and staff are safe, adhering to school expectations and in the appropriate locations; this includes periodic checks of restrooms and physical education locker rooms during passing times and during classes.
  • Assists administrators and school liaison officers during investigations of potential illegal activity on school property to the extent allowed by law and policy.
  • Discusses rule and policy violations with students and provides written reports to building administration for the assignment of discipline as necessary.
  • Monitors for student truancy and informs school administration of incidents.
  • Compiles information from student, staff, and visitor safety and security incidents and completes established reporting procedures as directed.
  • Works with building administration during crisis situations including but not limited to fire, tornado, and intruder drills, weapons control, and student disturbances.
  • Proactively identify and suggest ways to reduce safety and behaviour issues.
  • Builds positive relationships with students to foster trust, respect, and guidance; serves as a role model, promoting respectful interactions, and a positive school climate. This can include checking on and connecting with students on a regular basis.
  • Monitors for unsafe driving and illegal parking on school property and takes appropriate actions as directed by supervisor and building administration.
  • Observes buildings and property for vandalism, theft, and trespassing by unauthorized personnel.
  • Works with supervisor and building administration to monitor security cameras when needed for student, staff, or visitor safety.
  • Maintains security records, logs, and reports for time periods required by the school district.
  • Attends training sessions, conferences, seminars, district, and departmental meetings. Keeps up to date on changing developments, trends, and technologies.
  • Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with students, staff, visitors, and representatives of other agencies.
  • Communicate and observe human behaviour effectively.
  • Ability to use de‑escalation strategies for students, staff, and visitors; physically intervening when needed using proper procedures.
  • Utilise professional judgement when working with uncooperative, hostile, or angry individuals.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Proven teamwork, confidentiality, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and desire to work with youth in the 11‑18 year age group.
