The superintendent, in tandem with a project manager, will provide overall direction and control of day‑to‑day field construction activities on assigned job sites. Depending on project size, the superintendent may lead a project or oversee a portion of a larger project.
Responsibilities- Lead day‑to‑day field construction activities on assigned job site.
- Ensure jobsite safety through the implementation of safety plans and procedures.
- Review project documents, submittals and schedules to assess materials, manpower and equipment needs.
- Plan jobsite layout, security, office trailers and utility setups with the project manager.
- Designate areas for cranes, hoists, material storage and parking.
- Supervise field engineers in initial site survey and layout, ensuring accuracy before foundation work begins.
- Plan daily and weekly activities for each craft, providing technical instructions to foremen and resolving plan ambiguities.
- Collaborate with the project manager to establish ordering procedures for self‑performed materials, supplies and tools.
- Inspect ongoing field work for quality and uniformity, addressing deficiencies promptly.
- Provide technical guidance to resolve construction problems, collaborating with architects and engineers.
- Assist the project manager in schedule, cost evaluations and labor projections, adjusting plans as needed to maintain the timeline.
- Monitor equipment use and costs, assisting in the development of equipment projection charts.
- Ensure compliance with all laws, ordinances and internal policies related to construction.
- Schedule and manage governmental inspections for certificate of occupancy.
- Oversee health and safety on site, including first aid facilities and OSHA inspections.
- Maintain strong relationships with owners, architects, consultants and other stakeholders, resolving issues through direct negotiation.
- Foster training and development of subordinates through on‑the‑job and external learning opportunities.
- Lead career planning, merit increases and promotions for project staff.
- Oversee project close‑out tasks, including punch lists and as‑built documents.
- 3+ years of experience managing dirt crews on heavy civil construction projects.
- Strong commitment to jobsite safety and diligent in demonstrating safe work practices.
- Experience supervising crew.
- Experience using HCSS Heavy Job (tablet based).
- OSHA 10‑hour, First Aid/CPR, rigging, flagging, fall protection, trench excavation and manlift certifications.
- Highly organized with attention to detail.
- Effective communicator.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced team environment and meet deadlines.
- High School Diploma, GED or higher.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Requires working outdoors at times in the rain or snow and during cold, warm and hot temperatures.
- Must be able to work on call as needed.
