Overview

The purpose of this position is to function as a task level firefighter and paramedic.

Maintain familiarity with and adhere to the policies, rules, regulations, and procedures of the Fire Department.

Responsibilities
  • Conducts daily, periodic (anytime during the shift), and after use maintenance checks of assigned apparatus and equipment, including documentation.
  • Participates in firefighting, rescue, and EMS service delivery as directed by their officer.
  • Provides exceptional customer service to all residents and visitors to the City of Farmers Branch.
  • Participates in all administrative and station duties as directed by their officer.
  • Receives and relays information regarding the activities and happenings occurring during their tour of duty to the appropriate relief personnel.
  • Keeps superiors advised of progress, issues, and happenings that might affect the image, efficiency, or morale of the Fire Department.
  • Practices good business economics in the use of the Fire Department’s utilities, supplies, and equipment.
  • If available during off-duty hours, answers stand-by or special calls.
  • When required, assumes the duties and responsibilities of the Driver.
  • Acquires and retains all fire and EMS certifications, licenses, or other credentials required by the Fire Chief.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by superiors.
Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

Team oriented. Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the general public; ability to remain calm in stressful situations; ability to read, speak, and understand English. Ability to distinguish colors.

Exposure to dust, flames and smoke in the suppression of fires; physical demands require considerable physical effort with heavy lifting (over 100 lbs.) carrying, pushing, reaching crawling. Requires heavy muscular effort with resulting fatigue of arms, legs, back or sensory facilities.

Special Requirements
  • Must be able to pass a physical agility standard, medical exam and a detailed background investigation. This position is subject to call back to duty.
  • Must meet the Fire Department's annual Fit for Duty Standard.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, criminal background check, and physical exam.
  • This position is classified as a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment.
Licenses and Certificates
  • Valid class “C” driver's license with good driving record and ability to maintain while employed, required. Class "B" Exempt drivers license must be obtained within twelve (12) months of employment.
  • Valid Texas Commission on Fire Protection Certified Basic Firefighter Certification or equivalent (IFSAC Seals FF1, FF2, Hazmat Awareness, Hazmat Ops), required.
  • Valid Texas Department of State Health Services Paramedic Certification or National Registry Paramedic Certification, required.
Work Environment

Exposure to dust, flames and smoke in the suppression of fires; physical demands require considerable physical effort with heavy lifting (over 100 lbs.) carrying, pushing, reaching crawling. Requires heavy muscular effort with resulting fatigue of arms, legs, back or sensory facilities.

Certification pay is also available to qualified applicants in the amounts listed below.

Certification Pay:

  • Level: Intermediate — $720
  • Level: Advanced — $960
  • Level: Master — $1,200
Applicant Eligibility for Lateral Pay Policy (effective 10/01/2021)
  • Candidate must possess, at time of application, the following valid certifications:
    Texas Commission on Fire Protection Firefighter Certification, and TxDSHS Paramedic Certification

Minimum Service Credit: Candidate must possess, at the time of application, a minimum of 1 year of continuous full-time employment of TCFP Firefighter Certification, or equivalent, experience OR TxDSHS Paramedic Certification, or equivalent, experience.

Maximum Service Credit: Candidate can possess, at the time of application, a maximum of 3 years of continuous full-time employment of TCFP Firefighter Certification, or equivalent, experience OR TxDSHS Paramedic Certification, or equivalent, experience as transferable service credits.
