I’m partnering with one of the largest vertically integrated cannabis companies in Michigan to identify a Vice President of Finance who can lead the company’s finance and accounting function through its next stage of growth.
This is a highly visible leadership position for someone who combines strong technical accounting expertise with hands-on financial leadership. The ideal candidate will be comfortable operating at both the executive and transactional level, providing guidance to senior leadership while remaining close enough to the details to understand cash flow, financial reporting, audit, tax, treasury, inventory, and financial controls.
Cannabis experience is valuable, but not required. We are particularly interested in finance leaders who have operated within complex, multi-location, inventory-driven, manufacturing, retail, or highly regulated organizations.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the company's finance and accounting function, including financial reporting, close, audit readiness, tax, treasury, cash management, and internal controls.
- Maintain strong visibility into liquidity and cash flow, including short- and long-term forecasting.
- Oversee federal and state tax compliance and coordinate with external tax and accounting partners.
- Ensure accurate financial reporting across inventory, cost accounting, fixed assets, debt, taxes, and related reconciliations.
- Maintain and improve financial controls, banking processes, approval structures, and reporting procedures.
- Partner with executive and operational leadership on budgeting, forecasting, capital allocation, store investments, systems initiatives, and major business decisions.
- Evaluate financial assumptions and clearly communicate risks, opportunities, and potential tradeoffs to leadership.
- Develop and mentor the existing finance and accounting team while strengthening processes, documentation, and accountability.
- Significant progressive experience within accounting and finance, ideally including Controller, Corporate Controller, Director of Finance, VP Finance, or similar leadership responsibilities.
- Strong technical accounting foundation with direct ownership of financial statements, month-end close, and complex audits.
- Hands-on experience with tax compliance and working directly with outside accounting and tax advisors.
- Demonstrated treasury, cash-flow forecasting, liquidity management, and internal-controls experience.
- Experience operating in a multi-entity, multi-location, inventory-intensive, manufacturing, retail, or highly regulated environment.
- Experience with ERP systems and reconciling financial information across multiple operational systems.
- Strong understanding of inventory and/or cost accounting.
- Ability to challenge assumptions, identify financial risks, and communicate effectively with executive and operational leaders.
- Track record of developing teams while maintaining strong financial controls.
- CPA strongly preferred.
- Cannabis industry experience is a plus, particularly exposure to cannabis taxation and regulatory complexity.
- Experience with in vertically integrated businesses combining retail and manufacturing operations.
- Experience with debt, lender reporting, covenant management, and complex cash-management environments.
This is an opportunity to join a large, established Michigan cannabis organization in a critical financial leadership position. The successful candidate will inherit an existing team and infrastructure while having the opportunity to strengthen processes, controls, reporting, and financial decision-making across the organization.
