3+ hours per week, dependent on the number of classes assigned to teach. Classes may be Sunday–Saturday, and anytime between 9 am – 9 pm.
DescriptionExamples of Duties
- Develop lesson plans and deliver instruction to youth and/or adult students.
- Submit requests for supplies to studio technicians in a timely manner.
- Track student attendance for assigned classes.
- Commitment to nurturing students at their level of experience and supporting their creative growth.
- Prepare materials for each assigned class.
- Instruct students in the proper use and care of tools, materials, and studios.
- Return the studio to the same, or better, level of cleanliness after each assigned class.
- Provide feedback to the supervisor for areas of improvement or ideas for new class offerings.
- Act as a steward of the Cultural Arts Community at The Hawk and on behalf of the City of Farmington Hills.
The candidate should have extensive studio experience and familiarity with working in a shared community studio space. Ability to plan out and establish a safe and encouraging learning environment. Must work well individually and as part of a larger team of the Cultural Arts teaching artist’s roster. Cultural competency to work with people of diverse backgrounds. Ability to work independently and in an environment with minimal supervision.
Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Proven experience teaching youth and/or adult art classes in drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, and more. Need not have experience teaching all these fields of study but should have a specialty in which you are comfortable teaching. Hired individuals will work with the Cultural Arts Coordinator to determine which, and how many, visual arts courses they teach each term. A valid State of Michigan driver’s license with good driving record is required.
Interest in and experience in the arts preferred.
A bachelor's degree in the field is required. Extensive teaching artist experience is considered in lieu of an incomplete degree.
