Position Summary

As a Field Technician for Tetra Tech, you will work on a variety of environmental projects related to solid waste (landfills). Duties involve collecting complete and usable data for construction activities at client facilities. Primary responsibilities include daily documentation of landfill construction projects, including landfill liners and gas collection systems.

Essential Job Functions
  • Adhere to safety policies and programs, and practice safe working procedures.
  • Apply critical thinking and problem‑solving to complex field issues and, under general supervision, provide a proactive approach to client needs and urgent issues.
  • May be cross‑trained to perform monitoring, tuning, and maintenance of landfill gas collectors and other infrastructure.
  • Perform data collection and documentation on a daily basis.
  • Submit reports using computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and internal company applications.
  • Work independently applying general principles to various situations.
  • Build and retain mutual relationships with clients.
Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma required.
  • 1–3 years’ experience in environmental services or related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Mechanical and technical aptitude and understanding of field equipment.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals, and to present information orally and respond to questions.
  • Basic math skills for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office, email, and other software necessary to perform job functions.
  • Remote location in the upper Midwest; based out of Michigan preferred.
  • Required to work the same schedule as contractor (various hours up to 60+ hours a week).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in related field preferred.
  • License as a professional land surveyor in Michigan is a plus but not required.
Physical Requirements
  • Regularly required to stand and walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell.
  • Must be able to lift/move up to 10 lbs regularly, 25 lbs frequently, and 50 lbs occasionally.
  • Requires specific vision abilities including close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Fieldwork may involve travel and exposure to outdoor environments; must wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including a respirator when required.
  • An annual medical exam may be required based on the nature of the field assignment.
Work Environment / Environmental Factors
  • Walk long distances, up and down steeply sloped landfills and uneven outdoor terrain, while carrying testing/sampling equipment.
  • Work in extreme (hot and cold, wet or dry) weather conditions safely.
  • Safely operate or work in close proximity of heavy equipment.
