The Metrologist Technician supports the quality team by performing dimensional checks, metallurgical testing, and process measurements to ensure parts meet required specifications. This includes inspecting parts, preparing samples, performing hardness tests, completing calibration checks, supporting furnace testing, and keeping quality records updated.
Key Responsibilities
Metrology & Testing
- Perform dimensional and metallurgical tests (cutting, mounting, polishing, microhardness, microstructure checks).
- Conduct Rockwell and superficial hardness testing on different part types.
- Review specifications and set measurement or tolerance limits.
- Verify and maintain calibration of hardness testers and measuring equipment.
- Operate and clean carbon testing equipment.
- Use SPC tools to track process and product variation.
- Inspect parts after furnace processing and assist with sample pulls.
- Help with furnace testing such as:
- System Accuracy Tests (SAT)
- Temperature Uniformity Surveys (TUS)
- Check wash system concentrations and chemical balances.
- Check quench tanks for water contamination.
- Collect oil or process samples as needed.
Quality Documentation- Assist with PPAP documentation and process change forms.
- Record inspection results and prepare simple quality reports.
- Maintain quality files, logs, and supply inventories.
- Support internal audits and customer quality requests.
- Keep the Quality/Metrology area clean and organized.
Education & Experience- High school diploma or GED required.
- Experience in metrology, heat treat, metallurgy, or manufacturing quality preferred.
- Equivalent training or experience will also be considered.
- Able to read technical documents, blueprints, and work instructions.
- Basic math and measurement skills (algebra, geometry, tolerances).
- Understanding of basic statistics (SPC, variation).
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
- Comfortable communicating with production and quality teams.
- Forklift/Hi-Lo license preferred or willingness to obtain.
