Supervising Accountant

At the UCHC, this class is accountable for supervising the daily operations of the accounting function.

The Supervising Accountant reports to the Research Finance Director under the AVP of Research Finance. This position is responsible for independently managing a broad range of advanced budgeting, accounting, financial analysis, and financial reporting functions across UConn and UConn Health. This role serves as a key point of contact for internal stakeholders, providing high-quality customer service, clear communication, and financial guidance to departments and leadership at both UConn Health and UConn Storrs.

In addition, this role serves as the primary financial lead for the Technology Commercialization Services unit and for Research Service Centers at both UConn Health and UConn, as well as being a key point of contact for data querying and presentation. These are unique areas that require the application of accounting principles to their operations and require a high level of ownership, judgment, and coordination.

Supervises accountants, clerks and other staff as assigned.

Duties
  • Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews the work of staff, provides staff training and assistance.
  • Conducts performance evaluations.
  • Determines priorities and plans unit work.
  • Establishes and maintains unit procedures.
  • Develops or makes recommendations on the development of policies and standards.
  • Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures.
  • Prepares reports and correspondence.
  • Approves disbursements for petty cash, financial aid.
  • Provides for timely deposit of monies received.
  • Oversees billing/collection of student tuition/loans.
  • Coordinates reconciliation of all bank accounts, state funds, and student systems to the FRS system.
  • Prepares annual financial statements.
  • Utilizes computer systems for financial analysis.
  • Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply relevant state and federal laws, statutes and regulations.
  • Considerable knowledge of accounting/auditing principles and practices.
  • Considerable knowledge of governmental accounting and budgeting.
  • Skill in using personal computers.
  • Considerable interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to evaluate, devise and analyze accounting methods, procedures and data.
  • Supervisory ability.
General Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting and four (4) years experience in accounting, auditing or financial examination.
Special Experience
  • Two (2) years of experience must have been performing complex accounting functions in a governmental or university accounting system.
  • One (1) year of supervisory experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including complex formulas, data analysis, and reconciliation techniques.
  • Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis in a complex organization or in a public accounting/consulting environment supporting multiple clients.
  • Experience supervising or leading staff, including work review and training.
  • Experience with data analysis tools (e.g., SQL, Power BI, or similar reporting tools).
  • Prior working experience with either accounting for service centers or accounting for Technology Commercialization activity.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively while managing competing priorities during high-demand and peak periods, demonstrating adaptability and sound judgment in response to changing responsibilities and business needs.
  • Experience supporting and reviewing work of lower-level employees ensuring accuracy and consistency. Developing staff as necessary.
  • Experience developing processes and establishing effective workflows while managing new and existing responsibilities. Evaluating current operations, identifying inefficiencies and implementing enhancements to improve accuracy, efficiency and internal controls.
  • Experience identifying issues, analyzing root causes, and implementing effective solutions with minimal oversight.
Schedule

Full‑time, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with a 60‑minute unpaid meal break.
