The Education Specialist is a key contributor to our organization's mission of advancing excellence in education. Collaborating within a team of educators, this role supports and enhances education programs. The Education Specialist engages with diverse learners, providing expertise in the field and facilitating outreach efforts.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions

Oversee daily operations of education programs, ensuring the provision of essential supplies, reagents, and equipment; pack and ship laboratory kits to partner schools. Maintain laboratory inventory, order supplies, and schedule equipment maintenance and repairs as necessary. Collaborate with program staff for effective program management. Test and optimize protocols and equipment. Run molecular biology assays with new reagents and/or new equipment to optimize laboratory workflows.

Collaborate with the program team on experimental design and data interpretation. Collaborate with the education team to create and enhance educational programs, including in-person activities and outreach initiatives targeting K-16 learners, community members, and stakeholders. Provide administrative support for education programs, including database and website updates, vendor contracts, and event planning. Teach laboratories and lessons within train-the-educator programs for high school and undergraduate faculty and offer curricular support for external teachers to implement JAX-designed curricula in their classrooms.

Knowledge,

Skills, And Abilities
  • Working knowledge of genetics, biomedical research and molecular biology laboratory methods as would normally be acquired through an undergraduate degree in Biology, or a closely related field.
  • Experience in teaching and educational outreach is strongly preferred.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • A proven ability to work effectively in a team and maintain a positive work environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel in support of educational initiatives.
  • Proficiency in managing laboratory supplies and operating instrumentation commonly found in a biomedical/genetics laboratory; willingness to learn new techniques and operate new laboratory equipment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills for effective information exchange with diverse audiences.
  • Ability to learn and implement modern software systems necessary for program and laboratory management.

Education Requirements:

Bachelors

Experience Requirements: 3 years required/5 years preferred

Pay Range: $23.64 - $39.58 per hour, depending upon experience
