Overview

Position: SP - Research Technician,  at UConn Health. Responsible for performing routine or repetitive basic laboratory duties in support of research on memory consolidation in mice.

Responsibilities
  • Perform state‑of‑the‑art cellular‑resolution, fiber‑photometry, optogenetic, and behavioral experiments in mice.
  • Maintain a mouse colony and assist with overall laboratory maintenance.
  • Process lab purchases and coordinate student workers.
  • Assist with basic technical laboratory techniques and equipment operation (cryostat, microscope, pumps, compressors, x‑ray equipment, spectrophotometers).
  • Maintain accurate records, label, file and inventory supplies and tissue samples.
  • Calibrate equipment and perform minor equipment maintenance.
  • Serve as a resource for learning specific techniques and processes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Basic knowledge of research protocols, principles, and procedures involving rodent surgical and behavioral methods.

Basic knowledge of scientific techniques such as immunohistochemistry, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and reagent preparation.

Basic knowledge of operating small electronics (Raspberry Pi, printed circuit boards) and the Linux‑compatible game engine Godot.

Basic theoretical knowledge of neuroscience and physiology, supported by a strong GPA in related coursework.

Oral and written communication skills; ability to identify, produce, organize, analyze, evaluate, and interpret data; perform simple calculations and keep technical records.

Experience and Training
  • Associate's degree or bachelor's degree in neuroscience, biology, psychology, biomedical engineering, or related STEM fields.
  • At least one year of lab experience working with murine models of spatial memory, advanced optogenetics and stereotaxic surgeries.
Working Conditions
  • May occasionally need to lift standard laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • May be exposed to risk from elements such as toxic vapor.
Schedule

Part‑time, 15–30 hours per week. Schedule determined by laboratory needs; may include occasional weekends and minor holidays.

Salary

Hourly rate of $18.00. No benefits available.

Duration

Approximately 12 months, renewable based on need; continuous employment not guaranteed.
