Overview
A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions, and connecting readers with the right titles and products. You help maintain the attractive presentation of the store and ensure its efficient running, including unpacking and shelving deliveries, tidying displays, and handling registers in a quick and friendly manner to provide highly professional service.

Responsibilities and BehaviorsYou’ll make a great Bookseller if you have what we term good “behaviors.” You will be expected to demonstrate these behaviors and be held to high standards by your Store Managers and colleagues:
- Maintain reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts.
- Fill scheduling gaps when possible, being flexible and responsive to the store’s needs; we are open from early mornings to late evenings every day, including weekends and most holidays.
- Be positive and willing in your approach to work, performing assigned tasks with purpose and energy.
- Be supportive and considerate of colleagues, helping others on the team and showing kindness.
- Be cheerful with customers and consistently help them.
- Show aptitude and willingness to learn new skills and acquire new knowledge in the store.
- Above all, enjoy being a bookseller.
You will be trained and expected to be proficient in:
- Using varied technology, including registers, computers, tablets, programs, and other tools.
- Developing strong merchandising skills to maintain book presentation and store cleanliness.
- Developing effective visual merchandising skills for gifting, toys, and other product categories.
- Running a register competently to serve customers quickly and reliably.
- Supporting the receiving and unpacking of deliveries, and the efficient shelving that follows.
- Finding books and other products using knowledge, colleagues, Book Master, and available information tools.
- Supporting the café team willingly and effectively when needed.
- Understanding loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques, identifying theft, and seeking support for issues in the store.
All work requires physical activity including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and a lot of walking. You may work in other stores if needed to support the wider cluster.
Career GrowthAs you gain experience, you should expect your bookselling knowledge and skills to develop. Each Barnes & Noble Bookstore is the product of its bookselling team. You will increasingly contribute as you develop your expertise. You will:
- Build knowledge of fiction, nonfiction, and children’s books across stock areas.
- Use knowledge to maintain sections and present books attractively.
- Make effective book recommendations to customers across varied sections.
- Learn how to sell books in a positive way, supporting key sales objectives such as Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, preorders, and more.
- Build knowledge in Educational Toys and Games, Specialty Games, Hobby and Collectibles, music and movies, and Newsstand.
- Maintain sections and backstock and assist customers with their shopping.
- Support the success of key sales objectives, products, and new releases.
As you develop mastery of the role, you may advance to the Senior Bookseller level with additional challenges and opportunities for growth. You will, of course, comply with all company policies and procedures.
