Community Coordinator

The Summer Student Program brings undergraduates from across the US for mentored research projects at The Jackson Laboratory in Farmington CT. The Community Coordinator(s) assist the Residential Supervisor in driving SSP participants to (8am)/from JAX(5pm) on weekdays according to a schedule, participating in an evening shuttle rotation, and organizing group outings and activities on weekends. Community Coordinator(s) are invited to participate in SSP community meals and mentor dinners.

The Community Coordinator(s) are expected to participate in the weekly staff meetings. With oversight and guidance from the Resident Supervisor and the Program Director of the Summer Student Program, Community Coordinator(s) will help to foster programmatic harmony through communication and problem-solving with both students and Program staff while maintaining confidentiality, and ensures student safety through awareness and compliance with JAX policies.

This position is seasonal; applicants need to be available from May to August.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (WHAT YOU CONTRIBUTE):
  • Assist in implementation of day-to-day logistical components of the residential life program, including transportation, with a focus on community building as well as student well-being and safety.
  • Transportation of students in JAX-provided vans including regularly scheduled shuttles to and from JAX for work and to and from shopping and entertainment as well as occasionally facilitating routine and emergency medical care
  • Maintain informal communication, rapport, and personal presence, leading to a high level of awareness of individual student needs and challenges, with a focus on student well-being.
  • Maintain regular communication with program staff
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings
  • Participate in weekly community meals on a biweekly basis.
  • Triage student questions and concerns with confidentiality
  • Organize group outings and activities and provide transportation every other weekend during the program
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (WHAT YOU'RE GOOD AT):
  • Candidates must demonstrate ability and strong desire to work in a residential education and research environment, including outstanding near‑peer communication, leadership, organization, and mentoring skills.
  • Must be a self‑motivated, team‑oriented, patient and disciplined problem solver and solution builder.
  • Due to legal requirements for vehicle operation, candidates must be 21 or old to be considered for this opportunity.
  • Must hold a valid US driver's license and be able to transport groups of students in a van provided by JAX.
  • Preferred experience includes: prior work as a residential life staffer in a college or university setting, service as a peer mentor or teacher, and experience organizing recreational or residential programs. The ideal candidate is a recent or near college graduate pursuing a career or higher education in a STEM field. EXPERIENCE:

4 years required/ 4 years preferred

PAY RANGE:

$16.16 - $25.66 per hour, depending upon experience
