Mechanical Design Engineer
This Mechanical Design Engineer role focuses on designing custom fluid fill equipment and systems, including mechanical assemblies, piping, hose routing, sealing systems, and automated filling processes. You will collaborate closely with project teams to develop cost-effective solutions, create detailed drawings and bills of materials, and support equipment throughout build and installation. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to turnkey system solutions for industrial automation customers while growing your skills in a supportive, development-focused environment.
Responsibilities:
- Design custom fluid fill equipment and systems, including mechanical assemblies, piping, hose routing, sealing systems, and automated filling processes.
- Develop cost-effective mechanical designs that meet project requirements, performance targets, and safety considerations.
- Create detailed 3D models and engineering drawings using Solid Works for all mechanical components and assemblies.
- Prepare accurate bills of materials (BOMs) to support procurement, manufacturing, and assembly activities.
- Use AutoCAD to generate and finalize documentation, including layout drawings and schematics, as needed.
- Collaborate closely with project teams, including engineers, technicians, and other stakeholders, to ensure designs align with project goals and timelines.
- Support equipment through the build phase by working with the shop and assembly teams to resolve design questions and issues.
- Provide engineering support during installation and commissioning of fluid fill equipment and systems.
- Incorporate fluid system considerations into designs, including routing of hoses and pipes, sealing methods, and high- and low-pressure requirements.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of design standards, documentation practices, and engineering processes.
- Ensure all designs comply with internal standards, customer specifications, and applicable industry practices.
Essential
Skills:
- Minimum 3 years of Solid Works design experience, with a focus on mechanical components and assemblies.
- Automation or equipment design, particularly within industrial or manufacturing environments.
- Experience with fluid systems or fluid fill equipment, including integration of mechanical and fluid components.
- Proficiency in mechanical design principles, including layout, tolerance, materials, and manufacturability considerations.
- Ability to create detailed 3D models, engineering drawings, and bills of materials.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD for creating and updating final documentation.
- Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional project teams.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in design work and documentation.
- Ability to support equipment through build and installation phases, troubleshooting and resolving design-related issues.
Additional Skills &
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of fluid fill processes, such as filling brake, air conditioning, or coolant circuits.
- Experience performing vacuum, pressure fill, or lever fill operations within fluid systems.
- Experience and knowledge of pipe and hose design for both high- and low-pressure applications.
- Comfort working with turnkey system solutions for industrial automation customers.
- Interest in ongoing professional development and career growth within mechanical and automation design.
- Ability to contribute to a retention-focused environment and support a positive, collaborative workplace culture.
Work Environment:
This is a full-time, on-site role based in Farmington Hills, with a standard schedule of approximately 40 hours per week. You will work in a large office space and shop environment, collaborating closely with engineering and shop personnel. The setting combines office-based design work with direct interaction on the shop floor to support equipment build, integration, and testing, providing hands-on exposure to industrial automation and fluid fill systems.
