GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Speech and Language Pathologist/Specialist assists students to maximize their potential in the area of speech, language, and auditory processing by providing necessary services to students identified with communication problems. The Speech and Language Pathologist/Specialist reports directly to the Supervisor of Speech Services and the building principals.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's Degree in Speech Language Pathology or Communication Disorders
- Licensed in the State of NH as a Speech-Language Pathologist
- ASHA (American Speech-Language Hearing Association) certification, or ability to become ASHA certified
- NH DOE certification as a School Speech-Language Specialist
- Ability to develop responsible and respectful professional relationships with staff.
- Multi-tasker who is excellent at time management, motivated, and possess strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) issued by ASHA
Superintendent and Director of Student Services
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
No supervisory responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Organize and conduct identification program of students with potential speech/language difficulties.
- Evaluate speech and language functions.
- Plan the clinical program for students who have been identified as speech/language impaired, speech impaired, and/or students having related disabilities with communication needs (i.e. intellectually disabled, etc.).
- Implement the clinical program.
- Comply with State Standards, District Policies, and ASHA Guidelines in the processes of referral, screening, and placement.
- Follow district procedures for screening, pre-intervention and/or referring students needing a speech/language evaluation.
- Complete comprehensive and appropriate evaluations according to State Standards, District Guidelines, and ASHA Guidelines.
- Provide a complete diagnostic summary report including a summary of evaluation information and educational relevance. Complete IEP paperwork in a timely manner.
- Cooperate with the Individualized Education Plan Team, recommending/planning for program services in compliance with State Standards. When appropriate, make a referral for further evaluation. (If we refer, district pays.)
- Obtain and use diagnostic information: a. Participate in building committee (e.g., Student Assistance Teams, School Support Team) in order to provide pre-referral interventions, screening, and/or evaluation referral information.
- Administer appropriate assessments for each area of suspected speech/language impairment.
- Demonstrate understanding and use of the principles of diagnostic evaluation and interpretation.
- Maintain on-going assessment to verify progress toward established goals.
- Demonstrate program management skills including: maintain communication with the building faculty, maintain a physical environment conducive to learning, develop work schedule(s), which will fit the needs of the students, school, and faculty and report to building principal(s) and Director of Student Support Services.
- Implement Intervention Programs including the development and maintenance of the instructional component of the IEP related to speech and language, the development of long-range goals and specific objectives, completion of daily notes for each student in a timely manner and the use of a variety of approaches and materials to address the IEP that are compatible with the student's age and interest, and abilities.
- Attend workshops, in-service training, and staff meetings.
- Screen all pre-k and kindergarten students entering the system.
- Review all outside evaluations and referrals and make recommendations to the Placement Team, of which the Speech/Language Pathologist/Specialist is a member.
- Keep accurate records of active cases as well as those recently discharged from the program.
- The Speech/Language Pathologist/Specialist is responsible for the annual re-evaluations of each student.
- Provide progress reports in writing quarterly to parents and teachers.
- Act as a resource for teachers and parents who have responsibilities toward students with speech and language issues.
- Follow all other responsibilities as stated in the position description for teachers.
- Compile, submit and sign off (as appropriate) on required documentation for services provided under the Medicaid to Schools Program.
- Perform other duties/assignments as assigned by the Supervisor of Speech Services and Director of Student Services.
