Special Education Teacher, Teacher Assistant/ Paraprofessional
PURPOSE OF POSITION
To provide students with a strong academic program that will prepare them for college-level study; to create a learning environment that will allow students to grow and learn; to set high expectations for success; and to help students develop a positive self-esteem that they will carry the rest of their lives.
This position works closely with the Diné Bizaad Institute Director, Diné Language instructors and program, as well as our teachers in the Arts. Knowledge and skills in the areas of weaving and silversmithing is required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTSRequired Qualifications
- A Master’s degree in teaching preferred;
Bachelor’s degree acceptable with 5 years progressive experience in teaching at the secondary level. - Valid New Mexico teaching licensure with proper endorsement in assigned teaching area(s).
- Level I Licensure Required, Level II Licensure Preferred. (consideration can be made for a Secondary Vocational/Technical License)
Recommended Experience
- Minimum of three years of successful experience as classroom teacher in a secondary school.

- Ability to plan, deliver and evaluate lessons which stimulate and motivate students to learn.
- Positive Attitude.
- Ability to differentiate instruction for all learners.
- Effective communication skills with students, parents and the general public.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Computer literate with various educational software applications.
- Knowledge of curriculum, lesson plans and assessments.
- Knowledge and understanding of educational research and best practices in a college preparatory school setting.
- Basic knowledge, understanding, and respect for the Navajo language, history, and culture.
Desired Knowledge
- Application of Information and Communication Technology in a classroom setting (e.g. whiteboards or promethean boards.)
- An understanding and commitment to the principles of the IB Diploma Programme; a commitment to the NPS School Mission.
- Appreciation of the uniqueness of residential school.

New employees in this position must provide documentation of immunity or immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, and measles/rubella within thirty (30) days of hiring, and at such additional intervals as may be determined by the immediate supervisor.
Navajo/Indian preference:
Consideration for employment will be given to Navajo, American Indian or Alaskan Tribal member with the required documentation including the necessary qualifications to meet the minimum requirements of the position. The Navajo/Indian preference law shall apply in all aspects of the position.
EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATIONThe position is placed on the approved NPS Professional Salary Schedule.
