This position is distinct from academic tutoring and instead centers on creating a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment where students can explore interests, build relationships, and thrive as emerging leaders. The OST Specialist is encouraged to bring their own skills, interests, and passions into programming, creating opportunities for students to explore real-world skills, creative expression, and culturally relevant learning experiences.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS Required Qualifications High School Diploma or GEDMust be at least 18 years of age1–2 years of experience in education, youth programs, recreation, or related field
Strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional conduct
Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends
Valid driver's license CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 60 days)
Preferred Experience Associate's or higher degree in education, social work, human development, recreation, or related field
Experience working with high school students in out-of-school-time settings
Experience facilitating group activities, workshops, or experiential learning
Familiarity with Navajo (Diné) language, culture, and values
Ability or willingness to communicate in Navajo Experience coordinating events, trips, or community partnerships
Required Skills Ability to build strong, positive relationships with youth
Commitment to culturally responsive and trauma-informed practices
Adaptability, creativity, and initiative
Strong facilitation and group management skills
Reliability, professionalism, and follow-through
Ability to supervise students in a variety of settings (indoor, outdoor, off-campus)
Desired Knowledge Proficient knowledge, understanding, and respect for the Navajo language, history, and culture
Appreciation of the International Baccalaureate and Diné philosophy of learning to support student's residential and day school experience.
Knowledge in college and career readiness, real-world skills, and/or specialized areas of interest (e.g. arts, trades, technology, cultural practices, wellness, outdoor recreation, entrepreneurship), with a willingness to share these skills with students.
Familiarity with data entry systems or databases (EZReports, Modern Campus Involve, Excel, etc.) Navajo/Indian preference:
Consideration for employment will be given to Navajo, American Indian or Alaskan Tribal member with the required documentation including the necessary qualifications to meet the minimum requirements of the position. The Navajo/Indian preference law shall apply in all aspects of the position. EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION The position is placed on the approved NPS Substitute Pay Schedule TERM OF EMPLOYMENT Salary and work calendar established yearly by budget and salary scale WORK SCHEDULETypical hours:
Sunday: 5:30–8:30 PMMonday–Thursday: 3:00–8:30 PM (Flexible based on events and programming) WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in classrooms, offices, the Hogan, gymnasium, outdoor spaces, and off-campus learning environments. The position involves moderate physical activity such as standing, walking, and carrying materials, as well as supervision of students during outdoor and recreational activities. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required for events and field trips.
