Adult Services Librarian
City of Farmington – Department of Library.
Pay Grade: J. Salary: $40,000 – $55,000 annually. Full‑time, regular position.
Work location:
Farmington Public Library.
- Work under the guidance of the Adult Services Coordinator.
- Plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate library programs to meet objectives identified in planning documents and community needs.
- Maintain current knowledge of books, authors, and trends in library services and programs.
- Provide general and in‑depth reference assistance and reader advisory using print and online resources.
- Participate in the development and maintenance of library collections (books, periodicals, online databases, media) and manage budget for collections as directed by the Adult Services Coordinator.
- Develop marketing materials to promote library programs, materials, and services.
- Contribute to the development of policies and standards related to collection development and adult services operations.
- Engage in professional organizations and activities to stay informed of current and emerging trends in public libraries.
- Plan and deliver instruction and training to library staff and patrons, including outreach programs.
- Analyze and interpret data and reports related to department functions and make recommendations to the Adult Services Coordinator.
- Interpret and enforce library policies and procedures for staff and the public.
- Oversee projects as assigned, such as evaluating the work performance of Library Associate and Reference Technicians.
- Work on specific projects, including maintaining special collections, developing library web pages, managing the interlibrary loan operations, and Government Documents collections.
- Serve on employee committees and represent the library on community or professional bodies as required.
- Attend work regularly; must be available to work varied schedules, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
- Participate in staff trainings, daily shows, meetings, programs, and other library training sessions.
- Operate a motor vehicle to assist in departmental business.
- Comply with all Adult Services department procedures, library policies, and City guidelines, rules, regulations, and policies.
- Masters of Library Science degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Background check required.
- Participation in the City’s Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program.
- Compliance with the City’s Environmental, Health, and Safety Program.
- Valid New Mexico driver’s license with an acceptable driving record for the past three years; ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- Extensive working knowledge of reference resources in print and non‑print formats.
- Considerable knowledge of modern library operations principles and practices.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills – effective with students, volunteers, and all staff.
- Ability to troubleshoot technology‑related issues and report them timely.
- Broad experience with integrated library systems software and subscription databases.
- Strong collection development skills.
- Knowledge of office management, work organization, and supervision; strong time‑management skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co‑workers, supervisors, City personnel, and the public.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills for interacting across age, cultural, and socioeconomic groups.
- Experience with public speaking and making presentations.
- Proficient in classifying and cataloging library materials using relevant tools and techniques.
- Ability to perform routine and complex duties with minimal supervision.
- Adaptability to frequent interruptions and changing work environment.
- Capacity to use discretion and maintain confidentiality in accordance with library policies and laws.
