Job Position #: 109 – Public Works Intern (Temporary, Part‑Time, max 20 hrs/week).
Location:
West Annex, 805 Municipal Drive, City of Farmington, New Mexico.
Department:
Public Works / Water / Wastewater Division.
Pay Class:
Temporary – $20.00 per hour.
Vacancies: 1.

- Work under the guidance of the Public Works Division Administrator.
- Drive a motor vehicle to support departmental operations.
- Provide excellent customer service and maintain effective working relationships.
- Assist the Water/Wastewater Operations and Maintenance Division with projects related to system collections and the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
- Manage ongoing division projects with minimal oversight to successful conclusion.
- Assist with division contract management and reporting.
- Develop drawing documentation for all disciplines utilizing AutoCAD / AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Utilize GIS base maps related to public works utilities and infrastructure.
- Scan and prepare engineering drawings for departmental projects.
- Conduct technical research for capital improvement projects.
- Develop assigned public works projects.
- Collaborate with public works inspectors, surveyors, and staff to review deeds, easements, plats, computations, plans, and drawings.
- Report findings and make recommendations to the supervisor.
- Respond to inquiries concerning engineering procedures for specific projects.
- Assist with inspections, review plans, maps, profiles, and specifications; complete required mathematical calculations for survey data.
- Perform field work related to collections infrastructure and maintenance activities.
- Maintain attendance – a core requirement of the position.

Qualifications- Current student in college or university; preferred major in civil or mechanical engineering, or engineering technology.
- Valid New Mexico or state driver’s license with an acceptable driving record for the past three years.
- Work with minimal direction; follow instructions accurately and timely.
- Understand and interpret working plans and drawings.
- Effective oral and written communication skills; ability to interact with employees, contractors, other agencies, city officials, and the general public.
- Conduct research to compile data for engineering reports.
- Meet time and cost constraints accurately, following guidelines.
- Subject to the City of Farmington’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy.
- Personal computer and associated software; proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Cellular phone.
- AutoCAD or AutoCAD Civil 3D (preferred).
Work is primarily office-based but may include outdoor inspections of land use developments, construction sites, or public works facilities. The employee must frequently stand, walk, reach, sit, lift up to 25 pounds, and use hand‑eye coordination for drafting instruments and office equipment. Work EnvironmentWork may occur in various weather conditions; the employee may traverse uneven surfaces and work near moving mechanical parts, in hazardous conditions (wet, humid, fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, electrical shock, vibration).
